I see this new rail system has been given the go ahead.

It was, and still is I think, proposed to cut through part of Whittington Heath (nr Tamworth) Golf Course - but not until the 2nd stage.

A shame, this is a cracking course, I hope they are given enough land to rebuild whatever gets knocked down

Anyone else know anything more on the impact to Whittington, their website hasn't updated for a few months.

And for anyone who hasn't - I recommend you play there !

More UK taxpayer's money been spent for the benefit of those living in the SE!
But then, thanks to the Barnet formula, more public money per head of population is spent North of the Border! As for Whittington Heath I agree it will be a tragedy if this fantastic, old course is lost; either in part or in full.

It ain't gonna benefit me one little bit.
It starts in London and ends in Birmingham - no stops. So how is that going to benefit me? I'll never use it. I'd have to go into London to get the train back out again. It's quicker to drive to B'ham even with dodgy traffic.
200mph trains every 10 minutes zooming past the town - and we get no benefit whatsoever.

Get that huge "SE/England" chip off your shoulder - do you really think that most of the people down here want or need to get to B'ham 20 minutes quicker?:sbox::rant:

Chill, by the time this gets dragged through the courts by the objectors, it will 3x the original cost & will be scrapped before it starts, the same for electrification between London & Bristol.

It would be a tragedy of Whittington Heath went but it's going to be many years before that happens as I doubt they'll start anything until HS2 to Brum is finished and as said above, this could be a very long time.

Played in a meet Smiffy organised there a couple of years ago, lovely heathland type course and recommended to anybody who gets the chance to play it.

Whittington is on the route from London to Birmingham; not on the route out of B'ham to the North so will be effected by the first stage. There is cross-party support for the project so expect it to go ahead sooner than you might think.

So does the route take it north of Birmingham and then back down again? Whittington is near Lichfield/Tamworth, well north of Birmingham.

I think the route goes near the NEC, links up with Bham Airport.
Still a 15-20 minute taxi into B'ham itself so little gain over taking a normal train.

It would be a huge climb-down if they had to scrap it. Most MP's seem to be in favour so it's about as done a deal as it can be without actually starting the digging. It's also supposed to deal with congested trains, they will allegedly run out of space in a few years.
Although the first trains are not likely to run until 2026, it's going to take years to build so I give Aylesbury Park about 5 years until the diggers arrive. The more immediate issue is the lack of investment that is going to applied to the course and club. If the club has 5 years, why would anyone pour money into the upkeep of what is going to be dug up..?
Not a very happy camper tonight.......

I'll swap your Barnett formula for our oil and gas revenue!

My son played for Essex boys as a youngster, and in his last year as a junior played at what was then Whittington Barracks in the English County Championships.
My wife and I attended the event and I remember it with great affection, as other's have said a great course, and the members were most welcoming.
As for the h/s link, my view is that the powers that be would do well to upgrade some, NO ALL! of the cattle trucks that ordinary folks have to use each day to get to work in order to pay the mortgage !! ( and of course the Golf Subs) before spending OUR money, that I thought they told us that we had not got, on such flights of fancy

I think this is another example of a government white elephant (think the NHS electronic records fiasco etc). Why not spend that amount of money on an infrastructure already in place and merely upgrade it to cope with demands (better signalling, longer platforms etc). If that mean cuts like Beeching's then that may not be such a bad thing.

It depends how they do the first stage, the route to Curzon Street Birmingham doesn't go through Whittington Heath, but the extension that connects to the West Coast Main Line does. If that extension is included in the first phase then I agree, Whittington Heath could go quickly as the proposal goes right though the middle of it. See link below.

We are in a recession, trying to save billions, just to stand still. We are making people redundant, freezing salaries, down grading pensions, social services, the health service, education, and council spending.

And in the middle of all this, we are going to spend 42 bn on a train line to get people to Birmingham 20 minutes quicker, in 14 years time.

I'm out, as they say.

Madness.

It will be ages before its started - if at all. But a shame to lose some decent countryside & golf courses.

But why does everyone always go ape about it being for benefit of the south east? You've got it the wrong way round - surely it's the Birmingham to London HS route. Which means all the raggy-arsed northerners can easily get down here and make it even more crowded ?

Oh, and I forgot to mention the 10 bn we are spending on the Olympic waste of space.

Can the government just stop spending on massive White elephants?

I can't afford it.
