high lofted hybrids

Certainly for me, the modern breed of hybrid is just a ballistic missile launcher.....flattish flight, low spin and long.
Little green holding capability
That's why I've got older versions...they launch higher and hold a bit of spin so I can fire at a green.
I have the G400 models and find they are excellent firing into par 3's off the tee and haven't notice too much of a flatter flight unless strike is poor. Certainly on par 3's I am seeing them pitch and stop fairly quickly. I haven't tried the latest incarnations, certainly of the Ping so it will be interesting to see if they are indeed harder to flight and control

Think I'm going to try some out rather than buy blind, seems like plenty of choices out there.
A must for me is looking pretty square at address, hence I was using Titleist.

Thinking about trying something like a 26 degree hybrid and getting rid of my 5 iron and starting my irons at 6i.
Set up then at top of bag would be driver, 5 wood (18 deg), 22 degree, 26 degree followed by 6-pw, 50, 56, putter. So only 12 clubs but don't think I need anymore really.

I’ve ordered a Ping 440 5 hybrid. No idea of its loft - standard I guess.

My game from 160-180yds out is relatively poor…it’s 6i and 5i and I’m not good enough to get accurate enough with them. My 4 hybrid is a bit too long and though I can choke back to top of my poor range..or accept long…it’s a fight.

Pro asks me why fight keeping trying to push my 6i and 5i beyond 160yds…just get the club that will drop me in the 160-180yd range. And that club is the 5 hybrid…and my test round with it in the bag went brilliant - range spot on and tremendous elevation and drop. So order placed. Could be a game changer for me.

I did the same a few months ago, replaced my 5 iron with a Ping G410 5 hybrid. So far the results have been positive. Strike is so much better/consistent with the hybrid, increasing my confidence. It gets the ball airborne so easily and lands with a decent enough descent angle to make stopping it on a long par 3 manageable.

I already use a 7 wood and was toying with a 9 wood, but a used 5 hybrid was easier to source and gives me some additional versatility in ball flight as well as giving me a nice option for tough chips around the green. A 5 hybrid is great for those awkward lies or long bump and runs I find.

This seems to be a bit of a daft side effect of iron lofts getting stronger and stronger. The lower numbered irons just don't have enough loft to launch easily. More and more people are getting hybrids and starting their irons at 6, like you and I. If you look at that on paper though it seems pretty ridiculous - irons that were numbered 1 to 9 now starting at 6. I wonder if in another five or ten years most people's irons will be starting at 7? The mind boggles.

As has been mentioned on here many times over though, a 7 iron now is effectively a 6 iron from the past. If the lofts in the bag are the same, just the numbers are changing, is it actually much difference?

It will be when they run out of numbers! Haha.
'What's in your bag?'
'Oh just driver, 3 wood, 5 wood, hybrid, then 9, PW, AW, GW, SW, LW, 50, 54 and 58, and putter.' 😂

You obviously have a lot tighter gaps at the top than me. I have D, 3W, 7W, 5H and then 6 iron, so that's four clubs for me where you have six. I don't feel like I have any gapping issues though - do your gaps really warrant having that many at the top end? Granted it might be the case that your 6 iron isn't as strong as mine (24.5).

What's the difference between your 5 wood and 3 hybrid? I go 3W to 3H and only really hit the 3W on long holes into the wind. I'd have thought the 5W and 3H would go around the same distance.

My 3W is strong lofted so it flies low and runs for miles during the summer while the 3H I hit 90+ foot in the air. I've never had a case on the course were I've thought "wish I had something between the 3W and 3H".

Got a pretty decent average dispersal (according to Arcoss) of 12-16 yards per club so for me that is more than adequate. More often at not it means I can hit the lower loft and not have to try and smash it and swinging smoother normally equates to a better strike and overall distance

I thought my 6 iron was strong at 27.5, that 24.5 is mental.

I've had 3 hybrids and 5 woods down the years. Found the 3 hybrids went lower and ran more. The 5 wood spins more. I like that more for going over trees and landing on greens.

Don't even think I own a 3H at the minute. The 5 wood has been in there for years.

Jamie bought a Qi10 4 hybrid out of his Christmas money. It’s such a reliable club for him delivering a constant little draw either off the deck or off the tee. This his 2nd go at our 4th last week when we were out with the drone - his first was already on the green but a touch long, so he backed off this a little.
My old Titleist 5 wood just about goes the same distance, so I’m looking to upgrade with a newer htybrid this year, maybe a 3 hb to try and maintain some distance.

Never thought about it....but 10/14 of mine have head covers. Only the 50/54/58/64 wedges don't. Head covers are a real pain in the butt...........

Ditch the covers 😄 . I don't bother with a cover on my 3 wood or hybrids. Just driver and putter and even that is largely just to stop clatter. Liberate yourself!
