I've been struggling with this for the longest time...years... I've had 2 coaches, who've used hi-speed cameras to point out to me that:

(1) I'm square at release
(2) My right foot is FLAT at impact (I'm right handed)

The habit is so ingrained and programmed I've not been able to coax my body to turn! It's causing all kinds of problems, from hitting fat shorts, to hitting the ball on the upswing (iron shots), and of course skulling my shots...

Any tips or drills that you can advise?

What about sticking a block under your right heel so it's off the floor for the entire swing until you get used to the 'feel' at the end of the swing.

Then remove the block and try to get that same feeling. Surely promoting a right heel lift will turn your shoulders more at the point of impact anyway. I guess you may start hitting straight left to begin with too. Turn your wrists over less to compensate.

BUT, if it's totally ingrained try getting a pro to coach you to retain that swing but find ways to eliminate the fats and hits on the upswing.

The easiest way to give yourself more room to turn would be to turn both feet outwards. That'll give your hips more room to turn properly whereas as a square stance (although the preferred method when I was first taught) can get the club stuck behind you

to be honest, i've tried varying my stance, now i have my left foot open 45 deg, right foot about 5-10 deg. I videod myself, and i'm hunching, and striking the ball square... it's getting so difficult to switch this habit...

It sounds to me as though you are makking so many compensations throughout the swing there is too much to go wrong. Take it from one who knows about these things. The best advice is to get a lesson. A good pro will see the fault in minutes and get you back on track with your posture and stance. Once you are in a good position it'll be much easier to deliver the club back and through more consistantly

have to agree with Mr Simpson, I had an issue with driver/woods and tried alsorts including stance changes, ball position, club position etc etc

had 1 lesson and he sorted it almost there and then. I have got loads to work on but without his input I would have been in the same situation 12 months later!!!

Iv been guilty of this too Heavenarmy...
A good tip i got was to hit shots with the heel of your right foot raised a few inch's off the ground and feel like your right knee collapses and kiss's your left on the throughswing...
Think of having symbols tied to each knee and get them to bang off each other at impact....
Its taking a while to ingrain the feeling but my back isnt half as sore for it...Try it...Oh and welcome to the Forum.
