So everybody, lets try to keep this clean!

How did you decide what shaft type to use. I currently have a stiff driver and 3 wood and have read that that could be a cause for me slicing the ball right. I can hit my 8 150 which having looked around suggests a relatively fast swing speed but with the driver I seem to wuss out and never swing as hard as I have no control. Would a regular flic suit me better with a smoother driver swing?

I'm sure you can get a cream for it.

Seriously though, your better off going to get your swing analysed. I had mine done and I needed a stiff shaft but it had to have a low kick point. That's what I have now and it's made a big difference to my driving. For £20 it's well worth it in the long run.

Stiff is not really a universal guide when it comes to shafts as there is no set standard for flex. One manufacturers Stiff may pay as anothers firm or even regular.

Swing speed aside, there are other factors in your swing that will have an impact on the flex best suited to you. How you load the shaft in the back swing and how brisk, or not, your transition is. My suggestion would be to do what I did.......

......... I asked someone in the know :D

When I went to get fitted for my irons and wedges, I asked the fitter about woods and shafts to see if what I had at the time was right for me.

Turns out it wasn't

I had a low spin driver head, with a low launch shaft which wasn't a good combination for someone with the characteristics of my swing.

The fitter suggested a mid spin head with a mid to mid/high launching shaft. He made is suggestions, I hit a few, had a think, purchased the clubs and have never looked back.

go to AG and try some regular shafts, I have a stiff driver and also a regular shafted driver for no other reason than I tried it and it went well, it depends on how you 'load' the shaft i.e a quick/fast transition might suit a stiffer shaft than a smoother transition. Also the reg can give you the 'feel' of a 'whip through' as opposed to a stiff boardy feel.......the key though is how does it 'Feel' to you.

So see a pro and/or try some different shafted drivers to see what feels 'right' for you.
It could also be the shaft is fine for you but there are swing issues that a pro could sort- cheaper than a new shaft:smirk:

Really does depend on how you swing. And also on how your swing and the current shaft interact.

I have a relatively slow swing speed but fairly 'fast hands', so Stiff suits me better than Regular. I have both, in different head, and it' the Regular that slices - when i go after it.

Traditionally, stiffer shafts will tend go a bit (straight) right, but straighter, lower and shorter than softer ones. Slicing is a swing issue that shafts can't really 'manage'.

Softer shafts will tend to go higher and longer, but will often exaggerate any swing fault, so trees are in play (either side) rather than simply the rough!

Note the word 'tend'. I know an ex Tour Pro with over 110 SS who plays Regular. He hooks anything Stiff (I've seen it)! Probably some compensation that 'just happens'!

As others have written above, go try out some different shafts, personally I would avoid AG, there are some good stores, but there are others who just want you to buy whatever it is they are trying to off load. Try to find recommendations of fitters in your area, it's definatley worth it.

Exactly, I know at least 2 scratch and one 3 h/capper who have regular shafts in Woods and Irons because they like the 'whip' you get and it obviously suits their swing. One of the scratch guys got 'fitted' for new mizzies and stiff shafts, changed back to reg within 3 weeks
