Help with buying wedges

Wondered if anyone can offer some help/ advice on what wedges I should get, to add to my bag.
I curently have a set of Wilson Staff D7 irons (5-SW). The loft on my SW is 54, and my PW is 43.

I was looking online at sets of three wedges, and the ones I saw and liked came in 60, 56 and 52.
From what I see and looking at what I already have, it would make sense for me to get these, given that they are lofts that I don't currently have. However is it a bit odd to get a lofted wedge at 52, when my SW is 54?
I also read a blog that going up in 4 degrees from your highest lofted club is the best idea.... so in this case maybe 58 would be best for me?

Sorry for all the questions - but I'd happily take tips/ advice on what lofted clubs to get. I do feel that I want to improve my chipping onto the green game, so I do want to buy some. Just unsure of exactly what to get!

You definitely need to fill the gap between 43 and 54 and that would suggest buying a 48 (commonly available loft).

There is nothing wrong with having a 52 and a 54 depending on what you are using them for. I carry both but each has a different sole (bounce) and are mainly used for greenside and bunker shots.

There is no reason to have matched manufacturers sets when it comes to wedges.

Yeah if you like your sand wedge then look into a 50 & 58 wedge, but if you wanted a set i'd look at replacing the sand wedge & going 60, 56, 52, 48 if that fits inside the 14 club max! For me the distance drop off is about 10-15 yards between & I like that around the greens

Most people who buy a set of wedges will replace the iron set SW (i.e. take that one out of the bag). Also, buying a wedge set that starts at 52 isn't helping you much as you'd still have a big gap between that and your 43° PW.


I'd recommend you just buy the Wilson D7 gap wedge online. According to this it would be 48°.

Assuming you're regular flex they have three in stock here: https://www.golfbidder.co.uk/wilson-staff-d7-wedge Check the shaft though as two of them are KBS Tour 80 and one is UST Recoil. If neither of those match yours you might be able to find one elsewhere, maybe GolfClubs4Cash or Ebay.

After that you can just buy any old 58 or 60 if you really want one. But more important would be plugging that gap between P and S.

I don't have that. Someone else has recommended perhaps buying that too, to bridge the gap that's currently between my SW and PW. Perhaps I can start there and then see if I need anything with higher loft than 54! Thanks.

Thank you v much - that sounds a sensible idea. I will take a look at that, and yes you're right I am regular flex! Looks like one of those on sale will match the current set I have. Thanks for the recommendation

Thanks - makes a lot of sense! I just don't want to rush out and spend money without first considering properly what I'd actually use!

Thanks - I think I will go with that option.
It's just that I am a beginner (1 year experience), and notice that a lot of articles/ videos I've read and seen, golfers tend to carry three wedges. So I just thought that was the way to go!I thought I'd consider this website before making any decision on that though!

If you're a beginner I wouldn't go for a 58/60 anyway yet. Watch some of Dan Grieve's short game content - you could even read his book if you like - he teaches how to release the club and hit high shots, and a 54° sand wedge is plenty enough loft for that.

Not bad advice.
Its always difficult distance gapping between PW and specialist wedges as the latter aren't easy to hit full power consistently. As long as you have a wedge you can play out of bunkers and one you can play flop style shots with (these may be the same club), you can work around the rest.

Yeah I can't hit my wedges full without chunking them, but steady 50% shots are fine.

Also good if you can remember distances for swing lengths!

Bunkers from inside 40 yards is always my 60 wedge, the only one I feel comfortable hitting out of them.

3. Some people are really bad at half shots so need yardage specific lofts
4. An old PW would be c.52°, whereas now, like in the case of the OP, his PW is 43°, you need more clubs with a W in their name than you used to

What distance do you hit your PW and SW?

I had the D9's and brought the GW to plug a gap but honestly never used it - wasted club.

I think you just need the GW at 48°.
That will give you a good transition from 43 to 54.
I doubt you will need more than 54 at this stage and if you felt you did, you could go for a cheap 2nd hand 58 or 60.
I see previous comments about not hitting full shots with wedges and learning to chip with other clubs, all sound advice, but you’re likely to be hitting ~100 yard shots with your GW at 48°, which is very much in full shot territory.

Agree with this, I don't use my 60 degree for much else but for green side bunkers it's invaluable .
