as im new to this wonderful sport i need some advice on what the best putter is for a beginner either a blade or mallett, and what would be a good buy to start up with, all help gratefully received....cheers

Depends what type of stroke you have, if you have a straight back and through stroke a blade will suit you better. However if you have a rounded or an arc stroke then a mallet may suit you better. Hope this helps.

I guess it depends on you.
Everyone has a diff feel for the flat stick. Get to the pro shop and try as many as you can, and what one feels the best for you, often is.

Mallets are supposedly more forgiving than blade style putters.

Go and try a load, see what you like the look of and can hit reasonably well and buy it. You'll get better with it over time anyway.

It's taken me a while to get to know my putter so to speak, but it'll probably be the only club still in my bag in ten years time.

I thought a straight back and through suited a mallet, and a curved stroke suited a blade more so?

Correct. I think!!!!

However. I thought I had a straight back and through stroke. But after some carefull testing, I don't.

Hell. It'll change anyway.

Find something you like the look of, and practice with it 'till it hurts. It's all about confidence when stood over the ball anyway. Regardless of type or style. But that's just my opinion.

thanks for all the input, much appreciated, will get down my local pro shop and get some advice....thanks again, will post result after next weekend...cheers..!!!!

That's what i thought. Also agree that mallet putters generally are more forgiving, and seem to be favoured by higher handicappers ?

I have a blade, but only because i started with an old Ping Anser as a kid, and any other style looks wrong to me.

If you can putt, you can putt with anything :)
A new putter will not improve a poor putting stroke
Sorry :(

Despite the obvious 'qualification' gap. Which is why I suggested just getting something that you like the look of and feel comfortable with. It's amazing how much it can effect your own confidence stood over the ball.

However. I'm sure that regardless of which putter you choose a V..... would help you get that much better.

(Got it in for you Bob. :D)

It is probably the one part of the game more than any other where personal preference comes into it. If you don't feel confident with the putter then you won't make many putts. My advice would be to go to your pro and get him to let you try some on the putting green as it will give you a much more acurate feedback. Holes in the floor in stores have a sharper edge that gather the ball as opposed to a proper hole which needs to find a much greater part of it for the ball to go in

I agree with the type not mattering if you're not a good putter to start with, but just to put the record straight...

It's not the type (blade or mallet) that is supposed to be suited dependant upon your stroke, it's whether it's face balanced or toe balanced.

If your stroke goes straight back and straight through, in theory you are better off with a face balanced putter.
If your stroke is more of an arc a toe balanced putter should suit you better.

To find out which one a putter is, balance the club on one finger (near the head). If the face is towards the ceiling it's face balanced, if the toe points to the floor it's toe balanced. There are also lots of putters that will be somewhere inbetween

As Bob says, it's the player more than the putter. If you gave Tiger a 2-ball he'd still be a great putter.
