I was wondering the other day about club head size and how drivers are rouglhy tice the size of woods and drivers go further so what if someone made a club that has a head twice as big as a driver but was just as light maybe a bit havier how far would it go and would it be a good idea :D

I'm pretty sure that most of the driver distance is from the length of the shaft rather than the size of the head.

Quick quote from longdrivers website.
Id say the trampoline effect will only carry you so far with regards to head size.
LONG DRIVE TIPS
by CHRIS ROBERTS

Firstly, your standard driver won't hack it on the long drive tour. Go out and get your self a longer shaft (48"USGA limit / 50" limit vertically measured) and a lower lofted head (USGA conforming). Most cometitors are using 50" shafts with lofts between 4-8 degrees. with a longer shaft you will gain clubhead speed - which means DISTANCE!

Minigolfer you've just described my driver,

I'm sure headsize is restricted to 460cc, so you cant go any bigger than that.

Trust me when I say "dont worry about the club just worry about your technique and you''ll be fine"

i thought there was a limited size but it would be quite fun just to see what would happen with a bigger size and lobger shaft or just a longr shaft and i m not worried about my clubs just thought i d raise it to see what you guys think as i read it in a book or something

I had a go with the Callaway shop window driver. This is about 12 foot long, with a head on it like a football. Impossible to hit more than about 20 yards. There is a reason drivers are limited in length / head size. It is called control.

Would you mind using it at the next forum meet please Murph, so that us other poor buggers stand a chance

I think Fazer did a bigger head, before the limit was introduced, but I don't remember it going particularly far. I think the wind resistance stopped you swinging it hard.

Most tour pro's don't use the standard length in their dirvers. They prefer them slightly shorter, for more control.

Sadly, if you want to hit long, I think you need good technique, not just money.

for some reason all i could think about when i was reading through this thread was this...
