It's my 1st ever Comp on Saturday. Checked the draw sheet online and im playing in the second from last group with 2 other fella's one I've met before the other a stranger.
Went to the course after work for a practice tonite, managed to get 12 holes in before it got to dark but they were the best 12 holes of my life.
Par, bogie, blob, par, par, par, par, bogie, par, par, birdie, par.
I've only ever managed 2 pars on the trot but 4 in a row and a birdie, to be honest I've never hit that many pars!!

I know alot of you talk about 'having a card in your hand' is differant but if I can play like that on Saturday and the same on the last 6 holes i've got to be in with a chance or at least get cut.

I'm nervous but proper looking forward to it

Forget last nights good holes and concentrate on the job in hand on the day.
Worst thing you can do is stand on the tee and think "I birdied this hole last night, I'll do it again"...sure fire way to head for a double.
It's good that you're nervous. I think that always helps when you play in a big comp.
Good luck. Go out and show 'em what you can do and most of all keep your head down and swing smoothly. The good holes will come if you do

;)

Although it is nice to get cut in big chunks, you can also edge up on it. If you don't par the first 3 holes, keep your spirits up, rather than thinking this isn't as good as the last round you played.
Any cut is a good cut. Sometimes in trying to lose 3 shots in one go, we miss out on a 0.6 which would be ok if we did it often enough.

Make sure you have a recent warm up so you don't duff one on the 1st. If you can hit a good 1st shot it'll settle you.
If you're nervous think SLOW with the first shot. Because you're keyed up slow will actually be normal speed.

Well done,it is different with a card in you hand mate but just get a mental picture in your head of what you did well and try and do the same, use the knowledge you got now and stick to the plan.

Your 12 holes must prove to you that you have the ability to play to that standard.

On the first tee this must therefore be your mental comforter - no requirement to knock the cover off the ball, no need to lift your head to see where your shot/putt has gone - just accept that good shots are now in your bag and let it happen!

Good luck!!

When I played WH with the lads I hadn't played a game that was as important to me for over 15 years. So I reckon my nerves must have been the same as yours are now.

I took a very easy swing on the first to get the ball away, and didn't think about doing anything remotely ambitious for the first 5 holes.

I wasn't thinking of distance, just get it down the middle, and when I did miss the fairway, then just make sure it got immediately back on the short stuff.

I didn't think about my score at all, just write down the numbers and immediately started thinking about the next shot.

In the end, I managed my best round of golf since the mid 90s.

You'll be nervous, understand that, accept it.

But use the nerves in a positive way, to make sure you concentrate on swinging the club.

Don't fall into the trap of letting the tension get you tight so you start hitting at the ball.

A smooth 3/4 swing through the ball will go further than a tight 100% jerky swipe at it.

Then relax and enjoy the compliments.

Best of luck Steve.....
As the others have said dont even think of the card in your pocket...Dont keep count of your score just tot in the no's for the hole and walk on to the next tee...Wait until your off the 18th before you start toting things up...You'll be amazed at how comfortable you'll feel when your not thinking about things and just let everything flow.....
Im out tomorrow also(singles stableford) and i am currently building a plan of what way im going to try and play....
What ever happens plan your shot and accept the outcome and leave any bad ones behind you.....
With the round you played last night at least now you know what your capable of doing....
Remember also that the conditions on saturday may not be friendly to you either..... :D :D

Thanks for everyones advise, I tried to take it all on board swing slow and smooth etc, but had an absolute shocker!! Scored 25pts (10 out 15 back) Topped just about everything, probably hit every bunker on the course, recon i could of kicked it round better!!
I hit the one and only straight drive of the day on the 18th and said 'why couldnt i do that all day?' to which one of my partners replied 'thats why you will come back tomorrow'
Went out Sunday morning, course was layed out basicly the same and scored 39 points!!

Whats the worst that can happen is +.1 Never mind.
