First round of the club championship tomorrow with a cut after the round. Played liked an idiot yesterday on a solo round but went out with two of my regular group tonight. I think I may have peaked 24 hours too soon.

Sand save at the 1st for par. Pitch to 10 feet at the second and missed the birdie. Hit a great drive and a 52 to 6 foot at three and a nine iron to 3 foot for back to back birdies at the fourth. Two under gross and in uncharted waters.

Hit the green in two at the par 5 5th but then three putted trying to go up three tiers. Dropped shots at 6, 7 and 8 and then hit a great 5 iron into the wind to 6 foot for a birdie on 9 to go out in -1 gross!!!!! Fantasy golf.

I blew up a bit on the back nine as a result of my partners constantly getting in my ear about going too early etc and thinking I was golfing invincibility and trying a few shots I shouldn't but finished 8 over gross (had a double bogey at the par 3's on 11 and 13). Once I got back to striking it properly on the last few holes I finished strongly including a great apporach to the par 5 18th to 8 foot in front of a packed patio but missed the putt.

I guess the question is: Have I peaked or am I running into form. My thinking is as long as I put my front 9 down to a one off and not go looking to repeat the birdies but focus on swinging smoothly as long as I play to my handicap going out I've not played myself out of contention. My back nine score were the result of just a few bad swings so as long as I keep my focus and play one hole at a time I should make the cut.

Do you think that you have a chance Homer? Are there not many decent players at your club?I would have thought surely you would need to shoot like way under your handicap or is it one of these joke sideshow 'b' handicap championships?

Sorry I should have explained better. The championship per se is the lowest gross score over 36 holes and so I'm not going to win that even in my dreams but there is a trophy for the handicap prize (best nett) too and so I might have a slight chance in that.

We have a very good scratch team and one of our members is an England international and current County Captain. There are probably 15 or so golfers that on their day ca score two rounds at level or better.

That's yes to the OP btw.

Sorry to be pessimistic, but how often in your life have you had a birdie frenzy like that.

Still, lower expectations often bring best results. Take the pressure off yourself and all that.

Well the cut mark fell at nett 74 (+4) and the leader of the handicap prize is currently nett 61. Not sure whats leading gross. In answer to the question yes I did peak too soon. Started with a 7 (par 3 1st) and had an 8 on the 5th (par 5) following a lost ball. Lost heart and hacked the front nine to go out in 47 (+12 and all my shots gone). I naively thought on past medal scores that somewhere like +6 and maybe even +8 may scrape in and so buckled down to try and see what I could do. I made a good up and down for par on 15 and then 3 putted 16 after hitting a huge drive (for me) which put me +8. I then made a great up and down on 17 which has been a bogey hole historically and did the same on 18, holing a 8 foot downhill left to right putt.

In the end it was way too many. Ironically apart from the 1st and 5th I actually struck theball well in places but my short game was frankly crap and I had one of those days with the putter where I made good strokes and they just shaved the edges.

Day off then tomorrow and I think I'll go to the short game area and putting green in the morning and may wander a few holes on the back 9 when the last groups get there. As it happens I'm relatively happy especially as I came dead last last year (36 holes in one day) and failed to break 100 both rounds. At least I'm moving forward

By the time I was -2 gross after 4 holes yesterday the writing was on the wall. I've been playing too long no to know that a career score like my front 9 would not be repeated today, when it mattered, and that the golf gods were just jerking me around!

I think it's ridiculous that you're not entitled to play in BOTH days of your club championship - that's the whole point of having one isn't it? not to just find the top 40 players. If you wanted to do that just make it open to all the cat1 players and tell the rest to get lost.

you'd think that in the current financial climbs that clubs would encourage participation and club spirit rather than knocking it.

Shame... in your current form you might have shot a 65 the second round <GRIN>

my 2 cents.

Tis a bit strange, the whole point of the club championship is that it is a 1 day 36 hole drama affair with everyone getting a glimpse at the leaderboard half way round. It seems a bit off to split it into two days, especially if the first day had good weather.

Not played a CC at my new club but at the old one it was always split over 2 days, mainly as the rounds were taking 5 hours+!! Those starting at 11am wouldn't get their 2nd rounds in.
We always started the 2nd day in reverse order so the "losers" could get fairly well oiled before the leaders came in.

What if there are too many people who want to play to get it done over 36 holes in 1 day?

I reckon the 18 holes then cut then day 2 really sorts the men out from the boys......
