Handicaps in Comp with Men and Ladies

Just out of interest, played in an Open today, that both Men and Ladies could play in. Team event, best 2 scores on each hole count (Stableford). Playing Handicaps were 85% Course Handicap.

What adjustment in handicap does anyone suggest for ladies? We only had the old scorecards, but the course details were as follows:

Yellow Tee Par = 72. Yellow SSS = 71
Red Tee Par = 72. Red SSS = 67

Using the numbers given
Stableford Comp
A man playing to handicap scores 37 points
A lady playing to handicap scores 41 points

hence the men getting 4 course adjustment shots

Adjustment shots are added to the playing handicap.

Yes - can’t call them “courtesy” shots anymore

Interesting. Because, the ladies got 2 courtesy shots on top of their handicaps

So they had 6 shots too many ??

It is why I asked. I found our mid way through the round, looked at the SSS values, and reacted "Hang on a sec here......"

When I first became part of the handicap/comps committee it took a lot of getting through to some organisers that it was not 2 'courtesy shots' which seemed to be the generally accepted addition and there are laid down rules of what to give them.

Had a little 'ding dong' with one Captain when I gave the ladies 5 shots in one comp. Every single lady in the comp was at the bottom of the results sheet despite the extra shots which I made a big point of bringing to his attention after the comp.

Yeah that changed to "equalising shots".

I see they have now been renamed Paying Handicap Adjustment shots

Was the course playing as per the measured course or shortened for winter tees/greens?

On main course mainly. A few yellow tees were front of tee box, some at back. Generally played same yardage as card (never played course before). Ladies all on their own tee boxes, some a long way forward

No idea, results to be announced. I did have a 2, but perhaps they'll rob me of that too ha

Good idea.

I've just checked database, and Lady CR 2017 is 72.3. So, I think all can be forgiven. No idea why card had SSS = 67, given I thought Course Ratings were the same as SSS, but to one decimal point. Perhaps dodgy scorecards
