Hi,

My club does an annual review of handicaps i.e. once a year they look at each (active) handicap and adjust it up or down or leave it as is. I was told by a previous HC chairman that it is done as a requirement of CONGU.

Does every gold club do this? Is it a done by applying some mathematical formula or is it simply an opinion based upon what?

Club 2000 has a function within that handicap secretaries can use to help base decisions on but alot of it is opinion based on perception of a players ability.

Those who play week in week out in counting competitions shouldn't be affected much by this process though.

Every club should do it. Some don't. Effectively it's just a chance to put right or help put right handicaps that are clearly wrong and the computer/comps alone will take an age to put right. In particular you get the odd new handicap allocated where the guy simply can't play to it. You also get older guys who are getting worse year on year and probably playing less. A couple more shots makes the social golf more meaningful etc. As above though, it shouldn't affect most players.

It is a CONGU requirement, so all clubs should do it. They say that it should be done by a small group and not necessarily by the club golf committee.
When I did it 2 or 3 years ago, the club secretary pulled off the computer all those players that he said needed looking at and we checked each one's playing record along with our own knowledge of the player and either, cut or put his handicap up, according to the facts before us.We had no complaints from the players afterwards
