Hi,

Wonder if anyone may be able to help me at all. I’m a social golfer and not fully familiar with handicap issues and appreciate any advice.

I have always only ever played social golf however last year I submitted my first cards to obtain a handicap with the intention of finally starting to play competitions. Handicap came back at 17.

Shortly after this, I actually ceased playing and didnt end up ever playing comps. The handicap is now inactive and now I’ve just started playing again socially, I don’t play anywhere near a 17 handicap (way worse).

My question is - am I stuck with a 17 handicap due to me having previously submitted cards over 12 months ago, or do I need to now re-submit new cards to get an active new handicap?

Many thanks in advance,

You will get your WHS handicap on the basis of the scores you have in your record. Since that becomes active on 2 November it doesn’t seem worth bothering about your CONGU one now.

The answer to your question is you would need to submit 3 qualifying scores (competition or Supplementary scores) to reinstate competition status and be eligible to play in a competition.

If you can, submit some supplementaries as that will help make your WHS Handicap Index reflect your ability better and keep on doing so after the changeover. But you don’t have to do anything to get your new WHS. handicap.

Are you still a member of a golf club?

Thank you for clarifying - much appreciated.

Competition Status goes out of the window on November 2nd

Hi - yes still a member of a club - just still only playing socially since my return to playing not long back.

see my comment to Colin

As per his comments the more cards you put in the more the current system will reflect your current ability. With just 3 cards in initially your Handicap Index will jump all over the place as each new card is added. With sufficient cards in you can request a handicap review.

@Player1234 I gave you the answer to reinstating the competition status of your CONGU handicap but didn't make it clear enough (it was in my mind to do so) that it may not be worth bothering about since all changes in November. That being said, I have just reinstated a member's competition status so that he can play in the second last competition of our season tomorrow and we have another one later in the month.. If you wanted to play in a competition tomorrow at your club before the end of October, you need to get 3 scores in - minimally 3 nine hole rounds.

As Jim points out, there are no conditions attached to your WHS handicap about having to return so many scores a year for competition eligibility, but individual clubs may impose such conditions in their Terms of Competition.

I too am still keeping an eye on ours. Our last comp with the old rules is 30th October.

Our first comp with the new rules is acually on the 2nd November . Will be interesting to say the least I have already had to advise the organiser to change the stroke allowance.

I thought I'd read somewhere that we needed a break from Comps for a period after 2nd Nov so that things have a 'chance to settle down'.... what ever that means.

All the best with that. If you live to tell the tale, do come here and tell it.

I'm curious though how you are dealing with players finding out their course handicaps at a time when you don't want groups of people gathering around a chart on a notice board. Perhaps you are far enough ahead for them to get it from an app?

I'd be very surprised if there were any large gatherings of people around the charts as it roughly takes 1.5 seconds, if even that, to find your course handicap.

He says he submitted his 3 initial cards for handicap in 2019 which means he went into 2020 with a competition handicap and still has one.

Ouch! I didn't read his post carefully enough and too unthinkingly took his "inactive" to mean he had lost 'c' status. Well spotted!

@Player1234
Apologies for my misreading; rosecott is absolutely right .

That may well be a local decision but obviously Jim's club has more confidence/courage/foolhardiness. :)

:D:D:D I made the conscious decision to reschedule our comps so we had nothing in the diary for 2 weeks before the end of October and nothing for a week afterwards. My confidence is somewhat less than Jims!!!
