Played Thursday night in our singles 1/4 final against a 16 h/c. Beat him 3 and 2 so well happy but tbh he just wasnt that great and was knobbling it all over the place.

2 days later (yesterday) and the first round of the club champs and he walks in the clubhouse so we ask how he's done , "79" says he. Never mind mate hope for better tomorrow. "no" says he "that was gross"

Bloomin' 'eck thats 9 under h/c (nett 63) and has blown the nett comp to pieces with the next best being 70 Funny thing is his mate a couple of weeks ago shot 11 under his h/c in a comp

Just because you put cards in regularly and have an active handicap doesn't stop you from protecting your handicap. You could be capable of shooting par but if you "protect" yourself by returning +10 scores you're going to play off 10 in these sort of comps. Ok its a bit far fetched but its possible.
Its also possible to shoot well under your handicap. I shot +2 gross playing off 12 a few years back.10 under! In Medal.

If this guy does it again then there may be something going on. If he does it again after that then he's going to get a kicking!

A guy won our presidents prize couple of years back with a net 63 in the morning and a net 57 (13 under) in the afternoon. He's as genuine as they come, has got nowhere near this before or since and just simply had a day out where everything just clicked.

That said, there are obviously folk out there who are "at it" so I'd write a polite letter to the club concerned pointing out the players exceptional scoring and leave it up to them. If he is doing this regularly then the club won't do anything if they don't know. If all the opponents write in then a picture will soon emerge.

I can understand him being disapointed but someone playing off a high number like that has the potential to blow it away.

I had 46 points last weekend with an 8 on the card and a couple of lip outs also, it happens once every blue moon but is doable, every dog has it's day and all that. Came back down to earth yesterday though.
Unlessyour mate had 43 points plus, I wouldn't feel too bad about it.

Or at least I would have if he wasn't bigger, stronger, and quicker than me.

TBH I'm hoping every time I go out to have a day like that, so I don't think I can condemn anyone else that achieves it.

Unless you actually KNOW he's a cheat, give him the benefit of the doubt, and be pleased for him.

Sounds to me like the chap is in it to win it, as pointed out probably returning poor cards to get the handicap high enough to give him a good lead in the bigger events.

However, I have won two comps this ear, both were roughly about 9 or 10 ish below handicap. Genuine enough because I never played in many last year and never practiced at all. I played alot and practiced twice a week this year and it obv paid off. My H/C has been cut accordingly and it'll continue to come down.

Its a shame really if he is a cheat.

It happens, we had a texas doubles last Saturday, was talking in the bar to a chap who had come in with a 59.
His partner was a 24 capper, he played off 4. I was convinced they would win with that score.
On Sunday i found out that they didn't even make top three!
54 won it

Played yesterday with a mate off 24, and he was 4 over gross after 9........

Holed putts from everywhere and generally played great.

Still, think a drugs test was in order though!!!

I would suggest that every time we step onto the first tee all of us are 'in it to win it'.

Why is this poor guy getting the 'bandit' label but you feel you did not deserve this?

I would suggest that, as happened to you, his club will reduce his handicap to reflect this good play?

Our Captains day was won with a net 61 (10 under handicap[46 points]) off a 12 handicap.

I know the guy who won & can verify that he is a genuinne 12 handicapper. But, apparently virtually every putt went in, he chipped in and just played very well on the day.

Anything's possible in golf.

My 4 most recent rounds have been 79, 93, 86, 67 figure that out and you're a wiser person than me, you are right, anything is possible.

In my opinion Bandit is an expression solely for someone who consistently proves that they play to their h/cap or better, along with those KNOWN to be protecting their h/cap (if that's proveable in some way).

I may be able to check his current handicap for you - see the PM I have just sent you.
As some have already stated, all club members had to have handed in 3 cards from qualifying competitions between 1st Jan and 31st Dec 2009. If he didn't, then his handicap should be 'inactive' and he certainly shouldn't be able to enter any national/regional competitions. He also has to play in 3 qualifying competitions in 2010 to get his handicap 'active' again - 2009 comps cannot be carried over into 2010.
The trouble with 'handicap protectors' is that they make sure that they are outside the buffer zone in the 3 comps so that they go up 0.1. They only play friendlies at their home course, but then enter the summer knock-outs, and opens and clean up. Lowest of the low. It is up to the Handicap Convenor to address this problem and weed out the guilty ones, but I suspect that at some clubs this is hardly ever done.
I am about to give a few banditos at our club a nasty handicap shock!!
