Just had a chat on the phone with a mate of mine who played an individual stableford knock-out match today.

Its one of this regional/national things and my mate had home draw.

Anyhow, the guy he played had a current handicap (you had to show proof) of 24.

My pal is livid as this guy ended up with 49 points, hardly missed a fairway/green and putted like a god.

Apparently the guy said that he "isnt big on club comps" which I translate to mean "I was off 24, I havent played a qualifier since so I can protect my high handicap and win a nice holiday"

I said to my chum that I would put it out to your lots infinate wisdom to ask if anything can be done about it?

If he had played enough comps to keep his handicap current and up to date then your mate will have to grin and bear it I'm afraid.
If he holed out everything and signed a card, send it off to his club. They might chop him

If he does not play club comps then will that not make his handicap inactive?

Thats what I would have thought but not always true. I know when I was at Gillingham all handicaps were kept in a folder. I knew a couple of people who just didnt play comps at all yet their handicap never changed, always the same and no +/- figure next to it.

The idea about sending a card off to his club is a good one though.

Most courses are playing shorter because of the weather but even so this does have a slightly dodgy whiff. If I was your mate, I'd phone this guys club up pretending to be from the comp and double check the handicap. It's pretty easy to get a handicap certificate from anywhere and just because he produced one doesn't mean its kosher

I'd be asking if it was active or not. If he doesn't play comps and so the club say its inactive then your mate might have a case to appeal

A high handicapper has always got the potential to score 49 points if he happens to have a great round, when a low handicapper hasnt really got a chance, obviously nothing can be done and nothing should be done your mate and everyone else should take defeat gracefully although sometimes its tough to take.I for one hate losing however sometimes you just have to say the other player was better on the day.49 points is not a massive score albeit rare it can easily happen.

The current fast running conditions do suit a straight hitter who doesn't normally hit it very far (ie a 24 handicapper)...maybe he just played well?

It's quite difficult to be 13 shots under your h/cap on a strange course in a big comp where nerves will play their part. :(

Also...

"Players will be required to have submitted 3 qualifying scores (including Supplementary Scores & 9 Hole Qualifying Competitions and Away scores) during the calendar year 2009 (not the period between annual handicap reviews) to avoid having an inactive handicap for the playing season, 2010."

In other words, you have to put in 3 cards a year other wise your h/cap becomes inactive so you cant use it for any comps.

Most golf clubs now subscribe to howdidido.com if you are a member of this site you can go into any other club other than your own and check someones handicap. There were a couple of sh**sters in Kent a year or two back entering competitions off high handicaps and winning everything as they didnt enter comps at their own club and kept their official h/caps high. They were found out in the end but they did amass a huge number of good prizes first.

If I found out I had been beaten by someone with an inactive h/cap, I'd be bashing down the competition organisers door down.

Just to clarify... You have to play 3 comps a year to maintain your handicap. Is that April to April??

I only ask as it's my first year playing comps regular but I've only managed one as I've been working nearly every weekend this summer.

Only if the Club/Competition choose to apply the active/inactive handicap rules...then yes you are right....

I'm going to be controversial and say that in the real world, folk don't make 49 points with either luck or perfect conditions or improvements in their swing overnight.
Unless I'm wrong, off 24 he played to 11.
In a bounce game? possible. On the worlds most straightforward course? just about believable.
i.m.o. something's not right and it should be followed up.
I used to play in all sorts of Opens and Invitations and various.....never seen 49 points, only ever "at home".
It's deeply dubious.

It does sound very dodgy. For me to get 49 points I'd have to shoot -3 gross. I can't do that round my home track let alone a course I've never played.

Everyone is entitled to their day but this smells rather too fishy for me.

Also, at my place you must have played in three medal comps in the last six months to have an active handicap. It's annoying but it means that we don't have silly scores winning comps.

49 - pure banditry, shouldn't be humanly possible with a half genuine handicap. Surprised the comp. was full handicap, most serious comps have a maximum and only 3/4 handicap, helps keep things decent.

Date....May 2004.
Venue...Copthorne Golf Club.
Event...RMI Golf Society Spring Meeting.
Player..Andy Parsons.
Stableford Score...... 50 points.

I know. I was the Secretary....
:o :o :o :o :o :o :o

The guy was as honest as the day is long. Had attended the previous 8 or 9 Society events and played off 24. He had never won toffee. I can't even remember if he ever scored over 30 points prior to this game. Certainly he had never been in the prizes.
He just had one of the days. And I have never met anyone so apologetic over a score before (or since) in my life.
So yes, it can be done
;)

Wouldn't stop me getting right wound up if I was marking his scorecard though..
