Eventually I have gotten round to it and have submitted 3 handicap cards, two and a half years after I started. Last year I never got round to it as my brother in law who I play with refused to hand his cards in as he was embarassed by them and as it's im I play with every week there seemed no point.
This year he has improved by about 10 shots a round and the cards are in. The three cards I've handed in are not the best, I think I was trying to hard, especially on the last one which I made a total mess of. Scores were 104,101 and 108. Not sure how they work it out but I've had at least one nightmare hole on each card and have been told they don't count past a double bogey. Also the back 9 on the 101 card was done in 45 shots, so will they take this into consideration? Looking forward to hopefully playing in my first competition next week.

Basically the cards are altered to count any score over a double bogey as such (so ie an 8 on a par 4 becomes a 6,) then the SSS is subtracted from your best card to give your handicap.
Theres is no need to get hung up about what your scores are we all have good and bad days just enjoy!

I imagine they'll take the average and then knock a couple of shots off - my guess would be something around 25.

This is simply because (for obvious reasons) golf clubs prefer you're handicap to be too low and then go up a bit than the other way round - no one likes a bandit!

The clubs have s strict formula set by CONGU which to work to although you do occasional find a power hungry handicap sec! :-) who works to his own rules!

My post was based simply on my experience, maybe it's just my club that does this.

I submitted three cards: one was an 18 handicap based on CONGU calcs, one was a 23 and the other was a 28 (played in the pouring rain!).

They gave me a 20.4 handicap.

That makes sense to me, notwithstanding I guess the CONGU rules would require an average be taken, as I understand a handicap should be nearer to the best you're capable of than your average score.

Last winter the 3 cards i put in were 107, 104 and 98 iirc (par 72) and i ended up with 20 handicap. Im playing in my first handicap qualifier this Saturday. Since i put my cards in ive bought new clubs and had lessons so i get the feeling some abuse might be coming my way :mmm:

Do you know what night the committee meets to check cards and results from weekend comps with a bit of luck they'll sort it then for you.

Now I'm even more frustrated. Checked the club website and apparently the council only meets on a monthly basis. No idea when in the month though, it doesn't show this :(

That'll be full committee they handicap/comps sub section will surely meet every week?
I do hope you are right, though my club does seem to do a lot of things quite differently. E.g. I have never seen a starter on the first tee. It's also a privately owned club so the guy who owns it never turns away people who just turn up and pay their green fees, so some Sunday mornings we turn up at our tee time and there will be a load of day golfers queueing front of you. No point trying to point out that this is your tee time as that usually ends up in an arguement as they have been told to go ahead and play, and by the time you would walk back to the clubhouse to raise the issue you'd probably find another 2 groups have joined the queue. This is usually the worst when the weather is good. On the upside membership is cheap.
