The season over and the tee's are well forward. Handicaps frozen till next March. When we were juniors, we used to look forward to the off season so we could mess about with different shots and other things.
Today while playing I noticed I wasn't using half of the clubs in my bag, got me thinking about years gone by. So I'm going to take half my clubs out of the bag till next year. I might keep my 3 wedges, 3 wood, 4,6,8 an 9 irons and of course putter. Not only will it make my bag lighter, it will make me think a bit more about some shots I'm facing. I may go the other way keep driver, 3,5,7,9 irons 2 wedges and putter. I'll have a think about it before Saturday and see what works best.
Might make the cold frozen winters golf more interesting.........
Do any of you guys, do something like this for winter?

A couple of guys I play with only play with half a set over the winter. They also carry their clubs over this period.

I think I will do the same this winter at least until me and my lovely wee Pings get soaked. Then it will be back to the trolley and waterproof condom for the clubs and bag.

I often swap to about 6 clubs in a pencil bag in the winter. Forward tees, possibility of temps, doesn't seem worth faffing about with the full electric.

I see how you won your club championship now, going down to a half set combination which amounts to either 8 clubs or 9 clubs, 16 & 18 clubs in the bag are oh, so against the rules and too be honest would just confuse the hell out of me having that much choice.

Back on a serious note, 3 wood, hybrid, 6,8,PW,58, & putter is more than enough. Some days, drop the 3 wood add the driver, put in the 4 irons if its not too frosty (hate thinning a long iron in the cold! Ooooouch!) drop the hybrid, swith to 5,7,9, 52 wedge just to spice it it.

Its a good idea at times just to play with a limited set as it does make you think and concentrate.

I'm with you CC and I like your thinking, however in carrying 3 wedges I think your cheating by having too many options, live dangerously, after all you did say as a junior it was about shot making!!! :D

Due to the huge amount of water recently and everything turning to mud, I've gone to the winter set-up earlier than usual.

No point using the trolley and watching it get covered or turning up to find they've been banned and not being able to play, so I go to the carry bag and a half set.

This year's line up is:
3w, 21deg hybrid, 5i, 8i, PW, 56deg wedge and putter.

Not surprisingly, it isn't affecting scoring negatively at all. We still haven't had the tees pushed forward and when they do, the lack of driver and long clubs really ceases to be an issue. The extra flight from the 3w is probably doing me as well as the driver would anyway.

Until yesterday I had always adopted the philosophy that, as I had paid through the nose for fourteen clubs, I was going to get my money's worth by taking out fourteen clubs.

We have an annual 4-club challenge at our place which I have always avoided like the plague. If I can only get out once during a week, as was the case this week, then I want to play a "proper" round.

Yesterday I had a choice - enter the comp or take the missus shopping. No contest, really. I figured taking three clubs and a putter would be a laugh. Until, that is, I was told it was a medal round and being used for qualifying purposes (I'm still not convinced they should be doing that, but there you go).

I went out with a rescue, 6 iron and wedge, and for the first time in 30-odd years of playing golf I HAD to try and manufacture shots and really think hard about what I was trying to do, rather than merely being able to pull my 150 yard club for a 150 yard approach.

The net result was 9 over gross to play to my handicap, and a round which ranked in the top ten competition rounds for me this year.

There is a salutary lesson there for everyone. Take the opportunity to try different things, because you will be amazed at the results you can achieve. The big learning point for me is the added control I can get by hitting two clubs too much and just putting a smooth swing on it.

So my cart bag has gone in the loft along with my driver, and this winter it will be a stand bag and half set all the way.
