I played in my first Bogey Comp yesterday in a howling gale.

I had been told that it was a reduction only competition which seemed sensible given the format so I was quite surprised to get my email from HDID saying I'd gone up 0.1.

I'm really surprised that, given the format, it was a qualifier. Whilst good fun, it doesn't seem a credible competition format to give increases. I'm pretty annoyed that it wasn't made clear before the round as I'd have played it quite differently if I'd known.

Am I wrong to think that way?

A competition cannot be declared "Reduction Only"- this can only come from a very high proportion of Cat 3 and below competitors failing to score SSS +2 or better.
Bogey is a recognised form of strokeplay and a bogey competition is a qualifier if played under Qualifying Competition Play Conditions.

What would you have done differently?

P.S. Don't get Region 3 started on bogeys.

I admire your desire you get lower. There's too many golfers who manage there handicaps rather than turning out every week wanting to go low...

But at the end of the day the vast majority of us do it for fun, not for a living. Its only point 1 back, and there'll be plenty of other opportunities to get lower.

Its only agame.

I didn't know that about reduction only so, at the very least I've learned something.

I've never understood people protecting their handicaps, for me, the point of golf is to be the best golfer you can and achieve the lowest handicap you can.

Back to the bogey comp, the fact that it is matchplay effectively means you take on shots that you wouldn't do in a medal to try and win the hole which is a bit of a different mindset.

Having slept on it, I think what annoyed me was that I was told one thing and so didn't take it seriously as if I'd known there was "a card in my hand". But that's probably a lesson in itself!

While I agree with you that people should try and play the best they can each game and no doubt do, I can also see that the format does change your mindset. I played in a 'powerplay' style format last week where there were on 9 of the 18 greens there were black flags where you scored big points if you made nett par or birdie. Positions were set accordingly so being 6 foot away didn't mean you expected to score every time as a slight miss putt meant you could be 18 foot away next shot. It was fun - we all went for the black flags but if it was a qualifier we probaly would have gone for the makable normal pins.

I think I would be a bit annoyed if I thought it was not a qualifier only to find it was later on.

I suppose it all depends who gave you that nugget of information - I scored a stableford card recently and picked up on a few holes only to find the guy who told me the format was wrong and it should have been a medal foramt - my mistake for not checking :o :o
