Gym before or after work

i used to be the same. but for many year I could only train before work at 5.30 am. it sounds crazy but you just go to bed at 9pm. its remarkable how fast you adapt. it actually picks you up for the day too
I'm never ever going to do that either. I'd feel like I had absolutely no time to myself in the evenings if I did that.

You’d be awake for the same amount of hours. It’s all in your mind!
It's not about simply being awake. Time at the gym isn't time to myself, I consider that a chore! I mean the time once you get home, you eat your dinner and then you have a few hours of relaxing and unwinding. Rather than hurrying to bed to start it all over again. It's probably just me though, to be honest I often don't get enough sleep because of this.

Thanks all and particularly Wolf for his detailed reply. Am hoping I won't have too much testosterone in a morning though:)

Am just starting back at the gym with many years away from it so have signed up for sessions with one of the PT's but forgot to ask him when was best to go. Not doing any free weights at the moment. Have got a program of cardio on various equipment plus leg press, abducter and lat pull downs, plus some core and flexibility work for the golf.

Must admit to being confused by all the protein, carb, macro's etc. that seems to be mentioned everywhere now. I've been brought up with all the low fat and low carb diets stuff.

Plan is to head off to the gym at 6.30 tomorrow. Will have had to have at least one cup of tea though and also some low fat greek yoghurt just to take the hunger edge off.

Used to make up a drink of a small amount of fresh fruit juice, water and touch of salt when I did loads of aerobics. Is this still a good drink to have?

Use Myfitnesspal app, it's great and free.

Keeps a track of what you're eating and tells you what's good and bad.

Sorry, is this the real Stu:eek:;):) x

How does it work with meals you make? Do you have to put in each ingredient?

Haha yes it's real.

If you use 100g of chicken then type it in and it gives you all the nutritional values.

Alternatively you can scan the barcode on the packet and it gives you all the info.

I swear by it now.

Goodness me you are in for some fun now! Its a minefield. I have relaxed on it all to some degree and just try and have my diet as a lifestyle choice rather than a strict measurement routine. I have tried loads of things diet wise for fitness, recently did a spell of Keto which i didnt get on with. I believe as do many others a simple healthy mix is what is needed. think of your plate and fill it 1/2 veg, 1/4 protein, 1/4 carbs and you wont go too far wrong. I tried the apps to measure everything and got bored so quickly!

I do also avoid low fat anything, always go for the full fat versions myself. (i am a coke zero addict though!)

Re the salt drink, yes salt is required and if you are sweating lots it needs to be replaced. Much easier now, you can buy electrolyte tablets to drop in some water and hey presto. They actually taste OK too, i buy the SIS brand ones in tesco when they are on offer. Usually drink 500ml of one 30 minutes prior to any run longer than 45 minutes. Under that, its run what you brung for me!

I prefer morning sessions, but I get them in when I can. Very lucky that I also train at work.

Cheers all. Was an epic fail this morning. Woke up at 5 am and decided no way was I getting up then. We didn't wake up again until 6.30. Anyway, gear thrown in car and managed an early finish so went after work. Rest day tomorrow then am going to go Thursday am on day off.

Can't see me becoming a triathlete or runner but had forgotten how good the buzz of exercise is.

Rooter - the SiS tablets are on offer on there website - 2 for 1

I also use MFP and custom set my macros. You can check on IIFYM (If It Fits Your Macros) for a good idea as to what is a good balance to aim for.

Thanks Amanda. It all looks very daunting from what I've read so off to have a look.

Don't get to obsessed by it but try to have your nutrition there or thereabouts. I tend to be under on protein and over on carbs 99% of the time but I try to do better!

Well, I'm doing the gym either in the day or early evening after work. Am using MFP but for now just concentrating on calories, protein and fibre. Am loving the weights and graduated to doing hex bar deadlifts in Sunday's PT session.

Couldn’t find the general get fit thread, so posting here:

After hitting 95kgs just after New Year (I’m 5’9) I decided enough was enough. I’ve since been going to the gym 4 times a week and sorted out the diet. As of this morning I weighed 87kg, so very pleased with how things are going.

I’m a morning gym goer, hit the bike for half an hour then about 45 mins of weights. I prefer the morning as it has much less disruption to the day, meaning I can get home and spend quality time with the family.

In the week I go after work and at weekends in the mornings.

Mon - Fri I am already getting up at 6.15 am just to do the school stuff, kids, school run and get to work on time. No chance I could get up at 5am. I am also a night owl normally going to bed at midnight so that would need to change. I do prefer the weekend earlies but going at 5.30pm and in home and showered by 7pm is not an issue, kids no longer go to bed early so no problems with kid time.

No time to do gym(not that I ever enjoyed it) up at 4:20, leave home for work 5:50. Get home anytime between 3 and 7pm. Bed sometime between 9 and 10pm.
Would rather use my free time (that I have) to play golf, and sometimes use a turbo trainer to help the cardio.

After struggling last year with going through the process of being diagnosed with Crohns, getting medication sorted and trying to get back to living a normal life I decided 2020 is the year where I get dedicated to the gym. I'd been on steroids for the Crohns for probably 6 months of 2019 so weighed the heaviest I'd ever weighed and carrying a fair bit of belly fat so first mission is to shift that. Got a PT and signed up for the gym 5 mins from my work so go in there after work 3-4 times a week. Tracking my calories every day without fail, sticking to 1,900 and being conscious of my macros. Has been a little bit of a struggle to begin with but I'm genuinely loving it. I've also finally decided to kick the dairy as I believed it was the root cause of a lot of my Crohn's symptoms of late and honestly not felt this good in a long, long time, which has meant finding a Vegan protein, which Protein Works have sorted me right out with a delicious vegan protein, and then I still sneak in the odd bit of chocolate if I can make it fit my macros, but it's rare and in small quantities, and always end up regretting it so can see that being shifted soon as well. First goal is to get in decent shape for a holiday at the end of March (losing roughly a pound a week at the minute which was the aim, I've not got a lot to lose tbh) and then after that look to get into a calorie surplus and put on some mass. I'll be packing on the muscle like Bryson in no time.

Cancelled my gym membership this month. I was only going once a week, and factor in the occasional week where I didn't bother because I was busy or nursing a niggle from football, I was probably only going three times a month. Absolutely not worth it, not going to get any benefit from that. I have resolved to go for a run once or twice a week instead - have done that once so far in three weeks. Once again it's niggles from football, plus the fact that the weather has been horrendous at times.

Edit: We've nearly finished all the chocolate that people bought us for Christmas now, so that'll help when that's gone.

Never has be the signs clearer to retire from the game ?
