Those avid forummers will recall that a forthnight ago I had a double bogey on 17 and hit a drive OB on 18 to finish second in the monthly stableford when it was there for the taking.

Well I think I've done the same in the monthly medal. I have to be honest and say it may have been karma as I had a lucky front nine (balls going through branches, taking good bounces and finding nice lies). Hit a ropey 2nd at our 2nd to only just stay in bounds but had an unrestricted swing to put it on the green and make par. Had a sandy save on 4 (rare for me). Was hitting ok but not great but managed to get out in 41 (+6).

Managed to single putt 10 from about 12 feet on 10 for a par and then hit a great chip on 11. The ball was just out of a deep bunker on the slope about 3 foot above the sand. Managed to get a stance and popped it up and holed the putt for a flukey par. Had a good par at 13 from the front of the green (2 putting from about 30 feet coming up a slope).

Then the rot set in. Three putted for a double on 14 after a poor tee shot meant laying up. Hit a crap approach to the par 5 15th from the rough. Only had 105 downwind and hit 9 to take into account the heavy lie but caught it heavy.

Hit a rubbish approach into 16 when SC made it clear 9 iron was the club and I decided to hit PW anyway. Why?? Three putts from the front. Came to 18 knowing a par 5 would be good for a 69 (-1) in tricky conditions with a stiff old breeze. Hit the best drive of the day and a great 5 wood to the left side giving myself the best angle and 85 yards. That should be either an easy 52 degree or a 9 o'clock swing with a PW. As it was downwind went with 52 and hit a rubbish swing way right and lucky to get over the pond. Hit a 6/10 chip and the putt just stayed high side.

My putting lesson yesterday was paying off as there were a lot more single putts from distance and my overall distance control and holing out was better. I drove OK but my iron play (usually my strength) was pretty poor and I missed so many greens.

I haven't seen the final result but know that there will be a few that come in under par. Its becoming a habit now to be close but not quite sealing the deal. I'm not sure if its because I get tired (due to my diabetes and pancreas), I get ahead of myself (tried very hard to focus on one shot at a time) or if its just not my time yet to win. Bloody frustrating though.

I've got to say....i.m.o. the last 3 at yours are quite tricky. The 18th ought to be a given if you can get within 100 yards, but even then, the water is always messing with your mind!

Courses (to my mind) are all different in the way they finish. I can come in with 4 pars at mine off yellow, yet manage unspeakable horrors of whites....

Chin up Homer, soon enough you'll be standing on the 17th way ahead of where you could/should be and feel so relaxed you'll probably make par-birdie and pick up the silverware as you leave with your bags!!!

TBH I think that maybe you put too much pressure on yourself. If you aren't playing great, which is pretty much what you are saying, you probably don't deserve to win, but by playing to your strengths on the day it looks like you've maximised your position.

Ok, so the actual holes you messed up on are the later holes, so they look more important, but a round is made up of 18 holes, and you can only putt well on so many of them.

Just keep looking at the positives, and work on the negatives.

Then when it all comes together, you'll probably win 2 monthly medals in a row, and get chopped to unsustainable levels. That'll be worth a winge, eh ? :p

I think we could all tell numerous tales of when we 'could/should' have won comps but for this and that. 3 putts , OOB up last , shermans , duffed chips, topped drives etc etc

Point is that we can never play the perfect round of golf , I've shot gross 67(par 72) and all I can think about is those missed putts or that offline drive or a simple up and down that I didnt make. Take the 18 holes as a whole it's all part of the round. Winning under pressure(that we put on ourselves btw) is something that we learn to deal with the more we put ourselves in that position.

Take heart because the more times you come to the last with a chance to win the easier it will get

Homer , could your probs at the last couple of holes be a stamina thing ? Being diabetic myself , i find that i can really start to struggle towards the end of my round unless i have made sure my sugar/energy levels are well controlled during my time out on the course. Tiredness , both mental and physical , as you know , can affect your game in a big way.

Interesting point. I usually try and have a banana at the start of the back 9 and another after about the 13th or 14th. I'm not suppose to drink lucozade/powerade but do anyway (I figure I'll be burning the sugar hit of - my bllod counts when I get home is normally within acceptable limits) and I'll drink water as well.

I was tired on the practice ground before I started but one of the 3 putts was just a mistake and there was no excuse for the poor approach to 18.

I am use to the pressure and at the end of the day it was one bad swing. I hadn't struck the ball well all round and I guess I had done well to stay in contention anyway so I'll bite the bullet and rejoice that I'll get a few quid anyway

Are you fellas type 1 or 2?I'm 1 and I am lucky I've never really had a problem with tiredness on course,I usually sook a sugary drink on the way round and usually it keeps my blood good.My old man is the type 1 but he seems to suffer badly for being knackered after 15 holes but that I think is more down to his age.Saying that can I use it as my excuse for my woeful form this weekend?! ;)

Very true.

A couple of centuries ago when I was at the peak of my form / banditry I won a couple of medals on the bounce with gross 10 over scores on a par 71 course, which was far too long for my meagre talent.

Now I always analyse my rounds to see where I'm going wrong, and bearing in mind that these rounds were probably 3 or 4 shots better than my previous best, I still managed to think I SHOULD have knocked 2 or 3 more shots off.

Silly bloody game, I know, but what the heck, there's worse ways to spend a few hours. Just arrange for a buggy to meet you on the last four holes, and lord it on the way in ( just looked at your clubs card - wowser that looks to be a tricky finish  )

Homer

I know exactly how you feel.

I played on Thursday and shot a net 62 !! that was with a 7 on the par 4 18th !!! So as you can imagine I felt good going into a big club competition on Sunday, only to shot a net 72...Thats 10 shots different on 3 days. I was furious with myself.

So what can I say...stick with it, a magical round will come in a competition if we play enough of them !!!

Sod all this banana and glucose drink crap...

I just turn up on the first, light a fag, and smack it one.
If I play badly, I play badly. If I play well, I play well.
Too much thinking going on.
Too much practice, too much science.
Just smack it up the arse, and get over the bad shots

Homer.

I seem to recall that you carry your bag most of the time - am I right?

Maybe a trolley would help to overcome the tiredness over the last few holes?

Just a thought.......

Good point well made - one from HID then and another from my mum - maybe neutral colours!!!!!!

Or just get the one, but learn to accessorise. Play a round with Gok, and he'll learn you things to make your eyes boggle.
