One course this year for there men's open put there fees up from £35 last year to £50 so I decided against it this year.

I've just had a email to say there's spaces at this open and when I've looked there's at least 50 spaces available.

Hillside done it a few years ago but put there's up by £25 though you did get a decent scran afterwards, they only had a handful of spaces left.

Is it greed or not?

I just played in the Hillside open last Sunday. £75 including carvery lunch .
Lunch was nice course was great, Kenny Dalglish an Alan Hansen playing 2 groups behind as well. But was a treat, really normally only £25 - £30 for opens. Think clubs realising they can get extra cash in to supplement there income thru open comp price increases. Supply and demand cheap price and good course full comp too expensive or crap course comp half full.
Hillside was full.
Silouth and St David's good prices but distant travel is and issue.

Depends on the normal cost and whether you're getting value for money, unfortunately I think a lot of clubs are struggling and are looking at every opportunity to make a few extra pounds! can't blame them to be honest and if numbers are down, they'll have to rethink.

Foolish if they have spaces they can't fill.
A rise from £35 to £40 probably wouldn't cause an issue but up to 50 notes is a sizable hike.
And even if it is decent value for what you get, its still 50 quid.....
Greedy!

I think it is greedy and also a bit stupid.

Most of us that play in opens tend to go back to the same clubs each year, to see the price go up by that amount from the previous year...your just going to vote with you feet.

Name & shame Stu ! :D

Wallasey it is and i had the same email and the exact same thoughts as you Stu.

They cant even be bothered to make it a qualifier either.

I've always thought it should be 50% of standard greenfee maximum.

£35 was a bargain but because it used to sell out within a day or two I think they thought they'd be able to cash in and sell out. It has clearly backfired.

Btw Wallasey aren't the only ones to do this.

That's the issue as others say, because they sell out they get greedy and risk it backfiring, problem will be, if they do sell out they'll never drop the price again!

A couple of years ago Hillside put the cost for the women's team open up to £300 a team and had a very poor attendance, last year it was down to £180.

I think their foolish and its greed, there not looking at the bigger picture, when playing in these opens for a decent £35, how many people are considering joining in the future whether as a local or even a country member, I know I did with Wallasey, people will travel that bit further as I have done with Moortown, Wallasey and other good courses when its around £35 but when its £50 plus fuel they price themselves out and then as Wallasey have found now, they have loads of places and the extra they have received won't cover the amount of spaces they've got, nor will it be seen over the bar or in the shop, poor, very poor.

prob best some of you in the North dont look at how much some pretty ordinary courses down south charge for their opens.

not sure why you think an open comp should be half normal green fee (i assume you want prizes and food included in that too?)

I don't think it's greedy. The normal weekend green fee is £90, for this event you get a weekend round on a top quality course, food and if you play well, the chance to win a decent prize for almost half the normal green fee. What is the problem with that?

I looked at playing some and, to be honest, even with prizes and food, notwithstanding that it would be reasonable value, 50/60/70 quid for a round at an OK but nothing special course doesn't really appeal.....

there are some that are great value but they are few and far between these days. Nhants county, esp the pairs comp one that you get great value at still (assuming theyve got their greens sorted again)

£50 might not see a lot given the quality of the course, but theres a lot of competition in the north west when it comes to opens, the clubs have got to be competitive with their prices.

i don't know why it is, but take a look at lancashire on golf empire. There's probably twice as many opens as any other county.

I know one reason is There's a lot of clubs in the area, but they're certainly not shy when It comes to putting opens on.

Seems they were trying to cash in on demand and have misjudged the price point people will pay. Reckon they would have gotten away with £45.

Maybe making it a qualifier would of made a difference?
