There were something like 35 pairs and of that I reckon at least 60% played a few holes. Of the remainder a lot were ex-members anyway and so knew the layout or had played there plenty of time in club matches and opens. Even though I knew where the flag was on the 6th I still had to get it there and everyone else had the same chance. I can't see how having practiced on the hole made any difference to the execution of the shot. I hit the same club in as I hit everytime I play the hole.
What you also have to bear in mind is that until 8.45 on the day I'd not even met Sneds. He had no idea what the layout was, the speed of the greens or even whhere to go for some of the holes. At least he got his money's worth and given the speed of the greens it was a very steep learning curve. At the end of the day the option was there. Take it or leave it
