No, sorry I was not clear on that. The article was stating that most approach shots finish short of the hole. Whether that is due to overestimating your own ball striking abilities, miss hits, under estimating distances using your eyes/marker posts or a mixture of the above. After reading that I started to take quiet notice of my own approaches and those of my playing partners. The theory stood up well. Very few shots went over the back of the green, not that many went past the hole. Most by far were either short of the green or short of the hole. If you miss hit a shot that is going past the pin then it may end up level or near. If you miss hit a short shot then it will only be even shorter.

As you describe, some greens are softer, some are hard but you have to take that into account.

Next round you play take a mental note of where the approach shots land and you will see most fit this pattern. I am hoping that using the S1 will push me to commit to distances more and that will lead to more shots being closer to the correct distance or just past. If you hit every iron perfectly then this may not be an issue but there are not many regular club golfers that can do that shot after shot.

I agree, I always plan for that.

I recently picked up a Bushnell Neo XS and have been very impressed so far. I'll be posting an in depth review once I have had a few more rounds with it.

I've always had skycaddie handhelds. Using the SGX at the moment. I just keep it in my trouser pocket rather than clip to to my bag\cart.

I'm probably going to change soon. The unit is pretty good and gives me all the info I could possibly need but it's getting a bit dated and can be on the slow side now.

I thought about a GPS watch but I don't like wearing a watch when I play. Don't know why, just feels odd to me. But could probably get used to it.

The thing I really liked about my SGX is I can move the cursor around an image of the hole and it gives me how far to that point and how far left to the hole. Really helps me plan out my shots much better.

I'm probably not going to go skycaddie again. I had a lot of problems with the SGX over the years. I'm on my 6 or 7th unit now, lost track. Could be 8. So not confident about the Skycaddie touch and not overly happy about paying a subscription any more either.

I'm going to have a look at the Garmins (G6, G7 and G8) and see what they're like.

I have a SkyCaddie Watch and its great, might upgrade it to the Linx soon though with all the extra features.

The biggest thing with owning a SkyCaddie and especially if you play a lot of courses around the country as I do, is I have the knowledge that its right up to date, unlike any other GPS.

I've got the LINX (only eneded up costing £5 more than the SkyCaddie watch due to a deal AG had) and apart from when I'd somehow managed to reset it to meters instead of yards I find it great. Haven't paid for the subs though as I get what I need from the free membership so far. Oh, and I never wear a watch normally but have found it's really lightweight and doesn't feel odd wearing it. It's certainly helping me with club selection just wish it could do that for my consistency lol

I only really play my local course these days. I'm too busy to go elsewhere, and to be honest while I am still learning I find it beneficial for me to play on familiar ground.

The SkyCaddie watch (no membership fee) would be ideal then, as it was for me, front, back & middle of the greens, nice and simple, sometimes less is more, especially when new to the game, too much information can confuse your judgement and give you more things to think about than you need to when still learning.

Said the man who works for SkyCaddie😃

Staff discount?😃

Its a factual comment and a watch I had prior to working for them :ears:

Owned SkyCaddie GPS units (3) prior to any association with them, and no, no discounts or freebies :(

No point asking then😃

After trying several different GPS options from my buddies, I still prefer using the Hole19 Golf GPS App.
I've personally never found any error in the yardages & layouts. It's pretty sweet for tracking scores & stats. And it's free! :fore:

A few of the watches and GPS devices reviewed in this months GM. May be useful as a starting point. The S1 is a decent enough starting point although I prefer a GPS device, especially one that gives a flyover of the hole (ideal for away courses) and distances to different hazards as well as the green hence my choice of Sky Caddy SGx but I guess it comes down to preference and budget

But you do know you can't use it on your phone in a competition.

Puts tin hat on and awaits incoming.....
