OK, got this theory.

Being a married man, my access passes to the Golf course are restricted by the boss, to one day at the weekend, plus 1 afternoon in the Summer. Which I’m sure pretty similar to most of you out there, who are either married or who have girlfriends. You know, sacrificing that extra days golf at the weekend, which could make the difference to you being a good or an average golfer. Is so worth it, when you’ve got your feet up in-front of the tele and no one’s chewing your ear off about what you have or haven’t done that weekend.

So my theory is and this based on the guys who are single figure handicappers at my club. All good club golfers, are either divorced or just out of nappies, obviously there are exceptions to any rule, but that’s the theory.

what about those who are happily married but are allowed to choose when they play golf and if its more than once a week dont get their ear chewed off?

its funny steve, we have had this chat on here a bit. It seems most SF players are lucky if they play once a week, and most DO NOT practice.

without any evidence to back this up, i would say most SF players that dont play more than once a week and dont practice have already done their homework as far as golf is concerned. they have already put in the practice in previous years.

I'm lucky that HID lets me play and practice as often as I like. Still crap at golf but her and the milkman seem happy together. Seriously though, she does her thing and I do mine. As long as their enough time to have quality time together too everyone is a winner

i play once a weekend purely out of my choice although last weekend i played both days and mrs wasnt bothered at all. As for week time practice i can go as much as i like. This will prob all change after august though when she is offically HID lol.
In the summer months i go out after work and she isnt fussed as it gives her time to do things with out me getting in the way.

I used to play footy and golf which took up all weekend and 3 evenings a week when we first got together so guess she is used to me having time to myself and to be fair it works

I agree with your theory in my case I am still in touching distance of SF. Was down to 7 and heading lower playing twice every weekend and hitting balls 3/4 times in the week, then had an industrial accident which caused a break in play, met my now wife and have a 2 year old so it's now a struggle to get out for 1 round a week.

I can do what I want, when I want, as does mrs mog. That is the point of a relationship, you both get to do what you want. Ok, we don't have kids, but then we both don't want them. I do golf (well, almost), she does tennis. We meet up in the evening and spend quality time together moaning about how badly we played.

i think kids would affect it more than a mrs would especially the younger they are so if im still playing off 27 by the time i have litluns might be time to call my golfing "career" a day haha

I play once a weekend and Tuesday nights in the summer. If there's a two day comp at the weekend Mrs H doesn't mind me playing both days as long as I've flagged it in advance. The way I see it is she doesn't mind me playing and I don't take the pish. If we have a comp on Sunday, I don't play in the Saturday roll-up, not because I can't but because I choose not to. I've never had my ear chewed about playing golf as a result

What's stopping you grabbing a quick hour here and there? Chipping, putting or hitting 50 balls at the range? Just playing 18 holes even if it's twice a week is the SLOWEST way to get better in my opinion. You'd be better off playing 9 holes and then practicing your 80yd shots for an hour, 70yds next time etc etc

I used to do a lot of match fishing with competitions all over the country. I'd often leave the house at 06-00 and got home about 20-00. With petrol costs, bait, tackle and match fees it would often cost close to £100 for some of the bigger matches.

Due to work commitments I've had to reduce my match fishing and this year I decided to cut right back and concentrate on golf due to having limited time.

My wife and kids are rarely up before 10-00 on a weekend so if I book an early tee I can get home just as they are getting up. In addition I can also get at least one game in during the week during the lighter nights. Compared with match fishing I get to spend far more time at home with my family and to top it off my wife now wants to learn to play so it looks as if I might get another night out on the course ;)

LOL 2 games a week? Hardly worth membership of a club.

Good call mate, depending on my shift pattern i could play 2,3 or 4 in my 4 days off , drop wife at work ,kids at school ,pick them up house a quick tidy and Bobs your uncle no earache.
Plus my young lad plays so plenty golf in the summer nights.

Life sussed,lol

Damn right Steve or better still grow a set.

I work a week of nights then a week of days so every other week I can play Monday to Friday if I want then play late Saturday morning for comps. So get plenty of chance to play and practice. Plus no kids and the girlfriend is really easy going. I go shopping with her on a Sunday and she is happy to still go to any golf superstore that I fancy while we ware out.

I can see what your point is though. Anyone trying to improve their game needs to get out hitting balls be it on the course or on the practice ground. I think this is why you see so many good golfers playing off mid range handicaps, when clearly they could be lower.

Agree 100% with this. The practice ground is where the improvements happen IMO. I used to hardly practice but play as many rounds a week that I could did I see any improvement in my game nope not at all. So I decided to play a few less rounds a week a spend the time on the practice ground working on anything I thought needed attention. In a matter of months my scores started to drop quite dramatically from mid to high nineties to mid Eighties on a regular basis. Had it not been for me having Tennis elbow last year at missing 3 whole months of playing time I would possibly been a single digit player by now. Those 3 months off though undid all my hard work and put me back to square one which I am still recovering from. My coach said to me the other day isn't it funny every person I have seen on the practice area this week is a 9 handicap or under!!
