Thanks, found an Adidas 2 layer one on eBay for £65 brand new, so will take a punt on it!
If it's not too late, check the provenance. Bound to be the odd knock off floating about.

Agree that thin and flexible is best, just don't go near anything prickly...

I assume what they mean by two layer is an outer layer, then goretex and then an inner layer. If it means an outer layer then goretex I would be worried about the jackets longevity, the goretex layer would get a lot of abrasion.

2 layer one is fine for keeping water out, dont expect any warmth from it though, need to layer up underneath on colder days
i had a packlite GG a few years ago and thought it was nice and light, it offered no warmth whatsoever and when you did have to wear it in the summer, you would sweat like a pig in it and still get wet from the inside.

In which case it was definitely not Goretex.

Goretex is almost certainly the best of the breathable fabrics, and while it can eventually wear and water soak through, instead of beading and running off it will never leave you swaeaty inside

It may well be 'the best of the breathable fabrics' but that doesn't mean you won't sweat profusely in the right (well, wrong!) conditions. A 'wicking' bottom layer would likely help in those conditions, as it draws sweat away from the body. It's quite possible that a 'non-wicking bottom layer was in fact the cause of any discomfort. It's really a case of getting the balance of clothing right for the particular conditions.

If it keeps water out, it keeps water/sweat in

That is one of the selling points of Goretex it's a one way fabric - water will not get in but can get out.

I have never had this problem with sweat using a very lightweight ProQuip goretex jacket.

Only way goretex will condense sweat on the inside is if (a massive if) the humidity outside the jacket is greater than inside. It works on the physical properties of water vapour, not chemical.

If you are exercising to the point of being so hot you are sweating profusely, I'd argue that you're better off with just a base layer on rather than an outer water/windproof, even in in the rain.

Wrong! Though that's the case in several other types of waterproof kit - such as waxed jackets.'

The whole idea about Goretex is to have a water resistent outer layer, but allow sweat - in the form of water vapour - to permeate from inner throug the outer layer. Water and Water Vapour, while both being H2O, have different physical properties, so a fabric can be treated to allow water vapour to pass through (either way) but prevent water (droplets etc) from passing through. 'Waterproof and breathable' is probably the simply, and best known, term.

I have a GG gore tex jacket which I bought about 10yrs ago. It is a heavy one, not the pac lite style. Works brilliantly, never let a drop of water through even in some horrific rain. Never had a problem with sweating in it either, it works as it claims to. Perhaps I have been lucky with my buy, may be others have been unlucky with theirs?
