Golf Things That Gladden The Heart

I’m playing St Enodoc tomorrow 😍

Very excited as my opportunities now for playing ‘treat’ courses are much reduced…

After tomorrow it’s only St George’s Hill and Brancaster to play for me to have ticked off England’s Top 20.

Following the awful weather Monday and especially Tuesday, it’s been good today in Cornwall and should be reasonable tomorrow🙏🏻

Oh wow…St Enodoc is truly amazing

The humps, bumps and rumpled fairways of Deal and Sandwich, the elevation changes and routing of Porthcawl, the quirk of North Berwick, and the greens of Dornoch — St Enodoc is possibly / probably one of my absolute favourite courses…and objectively it’s so good!

Lucky in that it was the most perfect late afternoon / early evening weather, my beautiful girlfriend walking round with me — and it’s been so long since I’ve played a links… perfection❤️

This may be true - but I still made a 10 up the 18th hole of the medal yesterday.

I don’t think I’ve ever made a 10 before, it’s a genuine first I think, nor was I even playing badly… Hence my post is in this thread.

You just have to laugh really. I was in a fairway bunker after 2 shots, and I hit 2 out of bounds (long)… Before I could even contemplate what had happened, I was putting for 10…. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I had a 10 during a round were I shot 74. Was -2 for the other 17 holes and had a 10 on that one because I'm a tight git and had a quick look for the ball as it was new that round, found it straight away and took about 4 to hack it out the trees. Best part is I had hammered my provisional over the corner of the hole and had 80 yards to the pin and I also forgot about stroke and distance and going back to the tee rather than letting the red mist descend and hack around in the trees. Was fuming at the end but when we got in an 11 handicapper had shot 71 for a net 60 so even a par on that hole wouldn't have helped. Made me feel a bit better.

I'm top 6% of club, 5% of Northumberland and 4% of England. Certainly doesn't feel like it at the moment, just how bad are the other 96% of England?

you need to farm that handicap, I'm off 2 handicap again tomorrow for a medal round, rain forecast

I'll just have a quick look for my ball... Here it is in the trees.

Er, actually it's another Titleist 2 but it's not mine. I'll just move on to my provisional.

A poor chap out our club made an 11 on the final hole, a par 4, of a 36 hole medal.

He played off 6, and shot +1 in the morning. He was then +3 in the afternoon round through 17 holes… Total +4… before disaster struck.

He was in a greenside bunker for 2. He thinned it into a bush (3), and stupidly tried to play it (4), Then took an unplayable (5), hit it back into the bush (6), unplayable again (7), back into the bush (8), onto the green (9), and 2 putts…

He lost the nett by 1, but had he made a par, he would also have won the gross, off 6, in a field with 6 plus handicappers!

Apparently his playing partner was practically begging him to go back to the bunker and play his 4th, after he thinned it the first time… But he was convinced he could get it through the bush onto the green… And the rest is history!

There was a 12 on our 8th, a par 3, a few weeks back...
Took 7 shots to get out of a greenside bunker and then 4 putted.....
Kudos for not picking up and walking in... :ROFLMAO:
My worst was a 12 on a par 4, in the Club Champs no less. It's our S.I.1 which has a bush + ditch running to the right of the green. I sliced it into there, took a drop a few yards back and tried to flop it over the bush - didn't get enough height and put it straight back in. Then did exactly the same thing again. At the third attempt I managed to punch it awkwardly and just barely through a gap in the bushes and took a further 4 shots to get down from the greenside rough. Lovely stuff.

At least it wasn't windy :ROFLMAO:

At least you one putted it though after reading bob rotellas book! Could of been a 14 otherwise!

I'd be waking up nightly thinking about that.

Always liked St Enodoc but it's let down by a couple of holes.

Playing in a club Bogey comp tomorrow. In advance of it all players have received an email with a link to a single page document the club has compiled (All You Need to Know About Par Bogey Competitions) detailing the rules of Bogey covering holing out; picking up; scoring etc…all the stuff that is questioned and discussed on here for Bogey format.

I’ll note that the club has declared the comp as not being acceptable for WHS purposes, but that the Handicap Secretary will review winning scores.

Playing on an empty course, on a sunny day, early or late. No pencil, no scorecard, just playing for the sheer enjoyment of the game.
This is definitely one of mine...

Was luck enough to have tons of free time and a very empty course on friday.
I played one ball through but took the time to repeat bad tee shots or throw a few balls down and practice different shots.. play from different areas of the course i dont often land in (namely the left side), play from different lies, inbetween clubs and bunkers etc

Returned to the beautiful game 3 weeks ago after over 2 years away. The amount of confidence i gained a few holes in was amazing. Still going to book some lessons but hopefully i will get a few more like friday.

We've taken on a landscape gardener full time to supplement our greens teem. Well 'supplement' is one word - perhaps a more appropriate one would be 'complement'.

Our greens team has been fully employed trying to recover the course from poor weather of last couple of years and to establish the significant flood closure mitigation works we've done over last two years. As a result the 'course presentation' has fallen off quite significantly and we notice - and complain - about it. Frankly in a few places and respects our course presentation is not up to scratch....so we are grateful that the club has decided to invest in a landscape gardener with his remit being to work on 'presentation' - the stuff that doesn't impact playability - but that impacts perception of member and visitor alike.

We have had similar updates to the course recently. New greens staff and this has led to the course improving greatly, including the looks. New wall around the 1st tee along with good planting around the area has meant the first impression has been enhanced.

I see your 12 and raise it to 14.
Since 2014 I've put all my scores into a spreadsheet so I can tell you that my 14 came on the seventh hole at Welton Manor GC on 13th Aug 2016. Beyond that, I have no recollection. I have clearly blocked it from my memory. Probably for good reason.
