Golf Things That Gladden The Heart

Tried out a 5hybrid and what I’ve been taught re short game pitching today in a medal. Scores rubbish but that was mostly carelessness or not quite getting the new pitching right. The 5hybrid was ace.

So though scored rubbish I’m actually really pleased how some things went.

On Saturday morning me and my best mate played our last round as members at our current club.

Nice bit of sun, warm enough to only be in a mid layer, out before the comp early doors and round finished in 3 hours flat. Perfect way to say goodbye to the old track!

Golf itself was good but not great, slowly building back after a winter off - 3 good birdies but 6 doubles!

Its been a great first 5 years of golf, looking forward to a step up in quality of course now though - Droitwich awaits!

Lottie Woad (of my parish) got her first ever hole in one in a college comp yesterday. Damn…as I have consoled my own lack of one with Lottie’s (even the best etc) guess that means I’m going to have to improve my par3 GIR stats.

Btw…only kidding…delighted for Lottie as she’s going through a tougher spell at the moment, with one of her college team mates knock six bells out of courses. Mirabel Ting another name to watch in the women’s game.

You are a little late to the party but welcome. 🥳

I have and love my 4 hybrid….but I had a gap that I couldn’t fill with 5i or 6i, and 4h too long. The very first time I hit the Ping 440 5 hybrid my pro lent me I was 100% sold on it. The ball soared into the air like no 6 or 5 iron I’ve ever hit and dropped right in my target range…saints be praised. So one ordered and picking up on Friday. It could be a real game changer for me as my 160-185 range was poor and left me too dependent on my short game. Relatively good as that is I don’t get down in two as many times as I’ll two putt. Obvious really.

A suspected cheat, who always does well in comps when he plays with his usual circle of elderly folk, was drawn with a mate of mine this week in a medal.

We exchanged messages about what might happen!

Well, there were apparently two occasions where "the suspect" was in trouble. My mate stuck to him like glue. 😁 Two lost balls were the result and an NR.

He got in the car and drove off without stopping for a drink. He never does that.

Prevention is better than a cure🤣🤣

I had that years ago at Wimbledon Common. A "4" handicap played with two 70+ brothers every time in a comp and rarely shot less than 36 or level par. Rumours abounded for ages. People went out and there were suspicious actions but from a distance hard to prove. Club captain decided to introduce random bookings and similarly stuck to him like glue and the bloke NR'd. The club also chose him to represent the club in a scratch match and again with a stranger from another club shot well into the mid 80's and was soundly beaten

Will be interesting to see if your guy returns. Mine left a few weeks later

Didn’t play as such but went to another course today to use the trackman for the first time to get an idea of what distance my new clubs go.

First impressions, I was gutted. I thought I had hit the ball quite well whilst warming up, but the distances were rammel. The guy who was running the range came down showed me how the “ convert” button well converts from the ball you have hit to a normal golf ball on the course. Which kinda suprised me because don’t all golf balls go different distances. Anyway I went through the bag and got my distances which I have now had a look at on the trackman app.
Things I have noticed.
There’s a 25 yard gap between my 45 and 54 wedge., which emphasises why I am after a 50.
There was 1 yard difference between my 6 and 7 iron. I should have had another hit with the 6 iron. Pleasantly suprised with the results of the three woods. But my driver was proper rammel. I wasn’t to bothered about the distance on the driver but the ball flight and fade was rubbish. I did loft the club down one notch which improved.
First chance I have had re hitting the 45 and 54 wedge and they were lovely to hit. Just got to feel confident hitting the wedge. club distances rather than playing touch shots with the PW.

How many balls did you hit with each club. I normally delete a really bad strike/shot and then use an average of 7-10 balls to get a good idea of a "normal" length of shot per club

Greensomes competition on Saturday morning, feeling confident about putting a decent score together, my last few rounds have been excellent 😀
I also have Greensomes this weekend, on Sunday. My partner just got a new driver that he's been hitting 30 yards longer than the old one, so my main job will be trying to reign him in so he keeps it on the golf course. 😄

Lovely week of golf. Had the week off work, made no plans other than golf

3 Solid rounds on my handicap, cutting it 0.5 overall

9 hole par 3 with my dad aswell

Ahh the dreaded Greensomes competition..... i'd rather take the old ride round Ikea on a Saturday afternoon than play Greensomes!!

I hope your form continues.

Bit slower than proper foursomes I'd agree but not so slow and bad that Ikea is a better option surely.

Exactly this Homer. I started on the 6 iron and hit 5/6 balls and that was the average. But when I got to the later clubs the ones I nobbed I deleted. 👍

Picking up my new 5 hybrid tomorrow. Going to head out onto the course to calibrate it against the course in (at least a few of) the places I’m pretty certain I’ll use it.

Although I have a pretty good idea of how far it goes - for me that is quite different to standing looking at a shot and thinking ‘well my 5h should be right for this’. Too much uncertainty in my thinking there…so must get onto the course and actually play the shots with it and see what happens. Will also try it out in other places where I could use 4h or 5w - just to see how it and I fare.

First time this year we will be off the back tees. 4BBB comp to break us in gently. Hopefully going to the back tees will stop all the stupidly high scores that were seen during the winter.
