Golf Things That Gladden The Heart

Have had a right little result today. So had my ball fitting a couple of weeks ago and went for the PXG Xtreme Tour X ball. Bought a dozen whilst I was there and ordered a dozen of the Xtreme Tour in Yellow to give a go for low visibility rounds on the Pro suggestion that during winter they might be ideal but they weren’t in stock so Pro kindly arranged to have them delivered to me when he got them in stock, I also ordered an adidas belt from him for delivery.

I’d forgot about it when I got back Tuesday, courier just knocked at the door with my delivery today and it felt a little “heavy”. Opened the packet and there’s my balls, my belt along with a Dozen Yellow Wilson Duo Soft balls and a little note saying “sorry they took so long to arrive please accept the Duo Soft as a goodwill gesture due to the delay for your Wife to use”

Absolutely exceptional customer service, given him a quick email of thanks and advised any future purchase for the balls will go through him 👍

Getting a round on the Fidra course at Archerfield with best mates the day and the weather being glorious in mid October...
Had a great day, loved the course. Some crazy bunkers. Everyone really friendly.. Hopefully get a chance to do it again.

I joined a new club last month. Two weeks after joining I turn up for my first competition. As I'm walking across the car park, I hear someone say "hello Mark". I don't expect him to be addressing me because I have a common name and, in any case, I only know two other members and they're on the course already. However, it's the bloke who took my joining fee in the shop two weeks before. We had a quick chat and he made sure I understood the sign-in process for the comp and what to do with my card afterwards. He remembered my name and the name of my mate who joined at the same time. This might not seem like a big thing but it's a great way to make a new member feel welcome.

A good warm welcome to a club is huge

We have just started up a new members swindle open to all to help members jump in

There is new what’s app groups with new members and some old members who are volunteering to act as a new member “buddy”

One of my swindle group got his first ever hole in one tonight. I wasn't there but another member put his congratulations on the group chat along with a photo of said fella by the pin with his ball and the biggest grin on his face and everyone was sending through their congratulations. Lovely stuff 🥰

Our club has just updated their website. It was pretty good already IMHO, but they've smartened it up quite a bit, and made it easier to navigate.

The East Renfrewshire Golf Club
Just had a little look through couple of things to say really. 1) What a really well put together website and so easy to navigate, 2) Course looks absolutely stunning and makes me want to play and 3) I can't get over the price of a green fee or cost of membership looks unbelievable value for money (y)

We had a really positive club meeting last night in which the club fully set out our plans for rerouting our 2nd hole and building a new ‘world class’ practice/academy short game area using land freed up by the rerouting.

The plans have been worked on for many months now, with a lot of consultation with members, but they have not been popular with a quite large and vocal section of the membership - and so this ‘information evening’. There was a large turnout of members to listen to the club chairman; the club finance director; the club manager, and our course architect for the project set things out for us in detail, covering all aspects of rationale for the changes, risk assessments and financing, timing and disruption.

Given the noise and fury that has been expressed by many (claiming to be the majority and if not then a very significant minority of members) over the plans, I attended fully expecting a difficult, noisy and divisive meeting. But none of that happened. The meeting went very well, the presentations were superb and, in my eyes..compelling - with little being heard from those anti the projects.

Onwards and upwards. I’m excited, as many members are, over the plans. We are a very fortunate (and well run) club, and membership, to be able to contemplate doing what is planned.

Agree. I spent many a happy student hours tramping those fairways…though in my day there were hardly any trees…they were planted right at the end of my time there. Loved being a member, a cracking course and the views north to Ben Lomond…spectacular.

Thinking of our planned change to our 2nd hole. Playing it yesterday and as I reached the fairway, and then at just about the point where we will reroute the fairway, I looked to where we’ve put a flag indicating where the new 2nd green will be…and I could ‘see’ the route the new fairway will take - it was a ‘moment’. I could see that it should be a fantastic hole and a change that could really elevate the playing experience.

Our 1st is a fairly straightforward par 5 that requires a bit of care, but with a little bit of course and game management and given a SI of 10, most players can fairly comfortably come off with nothing (much) worse than a nett bogey.

The tee shot on the par 4 SI4 2nd is, and will remain a bit, but not too, daunting off the back tees for high teens and above handicappers as it is played between two large stands of mature pines. But once the player walks through the gap I truly think that the view to the new 2nd green will be a bit of a ‘wow, blimey!’ moment - as they see the shot(s) left. As the tee shot is played to an upsloping fairway and against the prevailing wind, a 230yd tee shot will still see 230-240 yds to the green - all still gently rising, with the slightly shorter direct line being across a dogleg of heathland rough.

It’s going to be great. There should be no disruption to play over the two years we are giving the hole to be built and mature. Can’t wait…but going to have to 🤷‍♂️🥰

Just viewed the County fixture list for 2026.
Amateur Championship will be at my club in June.
Not been held there since the 1980s when I was not a member anywhere in the county.
Not played in it since 2014. I was hopelessly bad that day.
Not played 36-holes on one day since July 2023. That was knackering, although I did come second place in club championship. Needed 48 hours for body to recover.

I will enter though.

Could be "fun". :ROFLMAO:
