Golf Things That Gladden The Heart

My coach is a blooming genius. Lesson today, I've been playing poorly last couple of weeks, after my best comp round of the season.

Three swings, he said, "stop slouching, your take away is too much inside, and you are spinning, rather than transferring your weight properly. "

Boom. Flushing it. (For me!) I said, I bet you could have phoned me and said that without looking!

Absolutely, he replied. 🤣🤣🤣

I feel the same, I had about 5 or 6 lessons over last winter and this year my handicap dropped form 23 to under 15! Every lesson I came away hitting the ball better.
Hadn't seen him since around April time but over the last month I have been struggling catching my irons thin, so went to see him last week.

After a few shots he simply told me I was dipping my head on the back swing, which resulted in me raising my head on the down swing, focused on keeping my head steady and been flushing it since. Went on to have my best ever score on Saturday with an 82.

I will be having a lesson every 5/6 weeks again over the winter to see if i can chase single digits next year!

A good coach can do wonders for your game!

Range session this evening from my perspective waste of time shoulder pain just stopped anything working.

BUT….. Mrs M had an amazing session, she’s really improving with every session and is really getting addicted. Made a couple of little swing changes to get more tilt in her turn rather than getting to flat and her ball strikings getting better and better.

She was getting addicted to the trackman stats seeing the ball speed, carry and total distance going up. She hit a PB long drive then beat it at the end plus she’s really enjoying the hybrids and how they fly.

I feel really proud of her as despite the fact we go on holiday Saturday she’s already booked a round for the weekend we get back.

A happy 91st birthday to Neil Coles today.

Played in 8 Ryder Cups.
Not bad considering his first one was at age 27.
GB&I in those days of course.

His first Ryder Cup team was,
Dai Rees captain, Peter Alliss, Ken Bousfield, Neil Coles, Tom Haliburton, Bernard Hunt, Ralph Moffitt, Christy O'Connor Snr, John Panton and Harry Weetman.

His last appearance was in a team comprising,
Brian Huggett non-playing captain
Brian Barnes, Ken Brown, Howard Clark, Neil Coles, Eamon Darcy, Peter Dawson, Nick Faldo, Bernard Gallacher, Tommy Horton, Tony Jacklin, Mark James and Peter Oosterhuis.

Ken Brown and Nick Faldo were both 20-year-old debutants.

Don’t remember the 1st but have a feeling I do the 2nd.

Played in an open at the club today, three person Texas Scramble, medal.

When I left the club this evening, the leading score was 55 (team handicap 17). We came in with a gross 68, net 60. Par is 71.

We had a great day, all 3 team members played well, and we all contributed. The best part? With a full field, we got round in under 4 hours. We never had to wait to play a shot, we never got anywhere near the group in front, the group behind never once had to wait for us. It felt perfect.

My mate Ben, who I talk about a lot on here, not the sharpest tool but comes out with the occasional cracker, such as coining the phrase "the carbon opposite" last week. Had another great one chatting after the round yesterday.

Basically, he had an iron fitting a little while ago, they put him in 1° flat I think it was, and he's trying to tell us that he doesn't think it's correct and he's thinking of getting them altered back. We ask him what the problem is, are they going left on him or something?
"Sort of - basically I aim left as I'm used to seeing it fade but they're just sort of staying there."
"Ok, let me get this straight - you are still aiming left, because you used to fade your old irons, but with the new ones the ball is going exactly where you've aimed? But you think the new irons are the problem? Have you tried aiming at the green?"
"Ohh.. when you put it like that..." 😂

"The carbon opposite" is genius
:ROFLMAO:

Shout out for a Forumer who gave me a set of clubs to get a young lad started in the game.

He refused to take any money for them too, despite my protestations.

I won't embarrass him by naming him on here, but suffice to say the recipient will be very grateful.

Your kindness is much appreciated.

This has made me feel old, especially as I’ve just Googled to see how old Howard Clark is. He’s 71… when did that happen? Where has the last 40 years gone? Peter Oosterhuis is 75…

Tony Jacklin is 81… I well remember Trevino breaking him in the Open in 1972. Jacklin, by his own admission, “was never the same after that.” A quick look at Jacklin’s record playing in the U.S. tells you just how good Jacklin really was. Whilst not stellar, it has to be looked at in the context of that time and the dearth of success from Europeans over there.

Think you'll find that, sadly, Peter is playing golf with the angels now.

Played Burhill old course yesterday, my course handicap was 5 more than my handicap(!) and I managed to shoot 2 under (course handicap 22, I shot 20). Very enjoyable course, greens were very tricky but loved it!
