Off to the gym tomorrow. Always seeing on programmes how much effort the tour pros are putting in to their gym work. Has anyone been given a gym routine specifically for golf?

I may draw one up tomorrow for you all to have a look at!

I just joined a gym recently, never been much of an athlete before and never had any interest in working out, but I have come to believe that lack of strength is really part of what is holding me back on the golf course. Plus I was starting to feel the effects of too much desk work and too little excercise in my daily life as well: frequent back and neck problems, general lack of motivation, tiredness etc. I am also struggling with a golfer elbow in my left arm at the moment, so I can't play and practice as much as I normally do (did sit completely out for about six weeks and have now started to play a little bit again). So even the bit of excercise that golf normally gave me was dwindling. Since I had no experience with weights whatsoever, I got a training plan from one of the trainers at the gym. It is mostly back and core strengthening excercises on the weight machines at the moment, because he said I need to build a bit of a foundation before working with the free weights. I am trying to sneak in more golf related stuff, though, so I've started working out with a medicine ball after my normal routine. The lightest one they have is 4 kg and it is a real killer. but I will give some of the drills from the video a go with it. (I also got it in my head that I want to learn to do pull-ups, but at the moment I have to admit that just hanging from the bar for more than a few seconds is hard enough for me)

My problem is going from a good standard of Rugby to golf puts me at a loss with Gym work, obviously a general level of fitness. But after watching a John Daly documentary yesterday I could start to see physique similarities :D.

Work on your compounds, squats, deads and bench.

This will help give you a strong core and also build up strength in many different areas. The increase in strength will improve posture as well.

And make sure you keep stretching!

I have downloaded the NIKE Training App - you can set you're workout to your specifics - so I've set up a Body weight only work outs! They have really helped so far and improved my swing, distance and football as well! (it also has Rory's routine on there for you to use -that bloke is a tank)

I would also FULLY recommend YOGA or PILATES - I started YOGA in may 2015 with a bad posture and aching back - now I have no such problems! Once a week will do because it expensive so put it as part of your fitness routine! It has improved my flexibility and core strength (which mr player himself states is most important)

I don't think there is Golf specific exercise to me its general fitness that is needed especially as amateurs.

Flexibility and a good core strength would be a good start.

Yes there are exceptions like Rory,Jason day and Adam Scott who have taken it to the extreme but on tour there are many shapes and sizes.

I look at people like Peter Finch for example who flit in and out,one minute they are going on about getting fitter then you don't see a video for months because they lose interest very quickly because there too busy doing other things.

Half an hour a day is all you need and will power to change, and if you have this your well on your way.

Too many people say one thing but give up way to easy and are weak mentally.

Don't forget to build a good repertoire of stretches into your routine. They will improve flexibility and aid the range your muscles can work through. Following my accident I've been in the swimming pool early every morning, this includes a series of stretches and flexibility exercises. It has paid off, I've never been able to touch my toes ... until recently. Take it easy to start with, but build up the stretches and the flexibility will come as a result. I was lucky in that I was shown how to stretch effectively and properly by the rehab physios, information that has been worth it's weight in gold. Build that into your routine or you may find gym work caused an adverse effect on your ability to move freely through the golf swing.

Will always advocate core strength building using either Pilates or yoga - I do three sessions a week - once in a gym and the other two at home.
