Yep. A club where a section of the membership consider themselves somehow superior or more valuable than others sounds like a pretty unpleasant place.
Presumably everybody is contributing some amount of cash towards the club. People can afford different amounts.

A club needs a mixture of all types of golfers

there will always be those that turn up play and leave - mainly those that have other things to do , young families etc etc

They are just as much a member as someone who goes and has a pint after or who plays in the club team etc

As mentioned before no club can survive on subs alone so need to have visitors and societies who on the whole want food ..Therefore a catering service needs to be supplied and hardly any clubs make a profit on food , most will make a loss but accept it .
Take visitors and societies away and subs would have to increase massively so for all those who support your club in partaking of food and the bar I thank you .

Yes they are members in the financial sense, they have paid their subs and are entitled to just turn up and play then leave if they want. But the clue is the word 'club' and they are not supporting the 'club' if they don't get involved in any of the other 'benefits' such as matches, social events, catering etc
There are many facets to golf clubs, playing golf is just one of them.

Their subscription fees “supports” the club

If you had a club that only had golfers that “supported” the club by using facilities then it would be about out of business

Most clubs have roughly 20% of members that play golf and the go home
