Hi all,

I am planning a trip away next month for 8 of us playing on 2 days.

Im looking to buy a trophy for the winner of stroke play on day 1 and stableford on day 2......is there anywhere you would suggest buying tropies from? Im only looking for a couple of cheap ones that dont look too tacky.

Also, im looking to do a longest drive and closest the pin on each day....would you suggest getting trophies for them or some other prizes...

Any suggestion would be much appreciated

Thanks

Matt

There are loads of places that sell trophies, best bet is to do a quick google search to find something you like.

Regarding the other prizes, I would go for a prize rather than a trophy. A dozen balls, a polo shirt, nice headcover from where you are playing if it is somewhere posh or something along those sort of lines.

We had similar numbers to you last year and we all chipped in a tenner that allowed us to buy a replica open trophy (E-bay) with our own words engraved. We also bought a couple of polos, a headcover, gloves and some balls. To give to closest to the pin, longest drive etc.......we had numerous prizes and meant most folk got something in the end for a small fee.

Depends on budget but assuming you will have a reasonable pot I'd not bother with trophies unless you intend doing it every year etc. Another thing I've found is that it's easier to buy a few prizes of similar value and let the winner choose rather than trying to grade the prizes. Also, avoid clothing or anything that's not one size fits all....... oh, and we once had a trip where the prize (a wedge) was won by the only left hander out of 33...doh!!

And you should absolutely make sure the trophy is the biggest, most hideous, tacky as super glue, garish thing you can find. It really adds to the occasion for the losers (especially if its just a group of mates)

Get a novelty tie pin for the 'closest to the pin' contest.

Perhaps a £5 Tesco fuel voucher for the 'longest drive' contest!

Both of those would make me chuckle at the end of a golfing trip. Cheap and sure to bring a smile.

Rather than clothing or gimmicks we usually all chip in for the closet the pin and winner takes all. We normally do 2 closet the pins so that it keeps players interested. Longest drive isn't as fun as the higher handicapped players tend to be poorer and shorter (not in all cases - disclaimer) of the tee.
