Golf Monthly Top 100

I don't know and ultimately I don't know if that would work. I assume there have been enough incidents over the years that a procedure is in place, either insurance or tough luck. With the amount of traffic going through there each day it must be a common occurrence.
What you actually supposed to do in this situation? Leave a name and number or just carry on?

I remember playing in the Dominican Republic and one hole was lined by stunning houses, wouldn't fancy that repair bill.

It's the 18th so at least you are walking in anyway. I actually don't know but I suspect the answer is to report it to the club and take their advice. They will be well versed in this. My guess is that their insurance would cover it but it's a guess only.

Needless to say, when I played it I went very left, car park is down the right. Very left 😄 . You are conscious of not trying to go so left that your brain doesn't believe it and so you end up slicing the ball, getting the opposite of what you want. I think I steered it rather than hit it. No cars dunged by me anyway, phew.

@KenL do you know what is the procedure there?

NBWL has insurance in place to cover damage to cars and housing if you are wayward on the 18th. Simply report to the CH or proshop or starter. Same if you car is on the receiving end of an ill-struck ball.

Have they ever looked at moving the green a little more to the left? Guide the shot away from there?

Not that I know of.

In fact once you’ve played the hole a few times you see the best line in is from the left so most of us aim over there anyway. Takes the “valley of sin” out of play.
Aiming and achieving that aim do not always coincide :ROFLMAO:.

Do you find the course over run with visitors or do they manage it well? It's a lovely course, I'm in the camp of 'I smiled all the way around' ☺️

Course is for sure busy over Summer but on weekdays members have the tee until 11am, between 12.30 and 13.30 and after 3.30 and all day Saturday and Sunday until 12.30. So if you can be a little flexible in your timing it works ok.

2026 there will be no visitors on Fridays either so we’re moving in the right direction.

As a member of the course I think NBWL is a wonderful place to play and for me playing it over 100 times a year it is always a joy. Happily not everyone agrees or it would be even busier 😉

Hardest thing about these lists is intertwining links and heathland courses into 1 ranking.

I do find them interesting, but I’ve never seen a really “good” Top 100 list.

This list is far too heavily favouring links courses for my own personal preference. In fact, it’s a pretty bad attempt at mixing them in with each other.

But with regards to the heathland rankings… good heathland courses are often all quite similar. You can never find 2 people who share the same views on the 3 W’s, for example… I’ve played most of the top Surrey courses and whilst it’s not true to say if you’ve played 1 then you’ve played them all, it’s definitely true that they’re comparable to each other and share a lot of similarities.

They clearly like Surrey heathland, they’ve got Hankley, Liphook, Walton Heath x2, West Hill, Worplesdon, Woking all up in the 40-75 spaces.

To then not have Hindhead in the 75-100 bracket is what maddens me. Because you can’t rank the others mentioned above so highly if you don’t rate Hindhead.

Hindhead is an interesting one

I beleive it’s on the next 100 list and one that’s close to getting there

I have only played it once , the holes through the valley are nice , but I just felt like the back 9 wasn’t near the same standard whilst still being decent holes. I understand they have done a lot of work on those holes but I would have it the same as somewhere like Blackmoor , Purdis Heath ,Enville or Beau Desert

All decent heathland courses

I’m never a fan of these lists but whereas I can understand the inclusion of most of these courses we will all disagree with the order. One course that always surprises me to see in them regularly is Rye. An ‘odd’ club yes, great greens yes, but a quirky mish mash of holes if you ask me but they aren’t.

The latest “top 100 golf courses” rankings have Hindhead just above Walton Heath new, and very close in the rankings to Broadstone, Parkstone etc. which is about right in my opinion.

It just seems weird how golf monthly ranks all of those mentioned above to be comfortably within their top 100, but then excludes Hindhead. They’re all too similar to be that far apart.

Me thinks that poshness of the club weighs a bit too strongly in the minds of Golf Monthly’s assessors.

No idea how the top 100 golf courses work - don’t know if they send assessors or use reader reviews etc

I know a few of the GM guys and they are pretty fair

GM also don’t include the courses that you can’t book on

There is a quite a few differences between the two

This is the next 100

There are a number in there I would alongside Hindhead

That’s always going to be a difficult one, however Pyle and Kenfig - really? 6 or 7 good holes and 11 or 12 distinctly ordinary ones. Good to see Thorndon Park in this one as I always rank it very highly myseif.

It is probably just me but when I see a few courses that I disagree with it denigrates the rest of the list, this is wrong I know.

Enville deserves to be very high on the list and surprised not to see a Frilford course on there.

The next 100 are always going to be very subjective

Thorndon Park is very nice

Enville imo is like Hindhead and Beau Desert and prob very close to the top 100 - they are certainly better than Tandridge , Woburn - Duchess and Dukes

i was just looking at the Top 100 golf courses list, i know its all subjective but that has to be the worst top 100 list i have ever seen.

No idea how they have ranked those courses the one that stands out as absolutely crazy is the Addington at 37 in England. I know its subjective but this is not a top 50 course it would be lucky if would just get in the Top 100, i know they have a great marketing team and have done work but look at the courses below them its a joke.

Also with all list I never understand the separation between courses like Walton Old and New, ive played them both quite a bit New is more fun in my opinion but agree old is a better course, but they are so similar how are they 25 places apart

I would tend to agree. Wasn't blown away when I played it. Some good holes but not a place that made you go "wow". Personally I wouldn't have all three Woburn courses in there either

100% agree about Woburn, I did play it in the winter months which will affect my opinion but when i played there it was not good, could barely stand up with how wet and muddy it was

Any list that has Addington as better than

Broadstone
Hindhead
S&A
Wallasey
Moortown
Purdis
Beau
Ferndown
Sherwood
Saunton West

And many more

Needs to be seriously looked at

There is always anomaly’s but that’s mental

Can only think the owners of the website play there
