Afternoon one and all,

This is just a quickie. On my lunch break today I phoned up to renew my home insurance. Whilst on the phone I asked about personal liability cover through my buildings insurance and theft cover for my equipment through my contents insurance.

To cut a long story short I took out specific £2,000 cover for my golf equipment at a premium of £10.56 and I'm already covered for personal liability through my buildings insurance. So if you are coming up to renewal on your house insurance you could save a few quid or spend a few quid and get yourself covered for golf.

I use golfcare amd it was only about a £25 premium and you get a few little extras like hole-in-one cover etc

Seemed a reasonable price to pay tbh

I have to agree with Tiger,I was thinking of buying Golf Insurance, until I went to renew my home insurance,
I am with direct line and they will cover all golf clubs as long as you advise them prior with value and to were they are kept when not in use,and you are also covered with your buildings insurance against accidental damage, they covered mine with no extra charge..

I know I wouldn't be. Buildings cover is a 'block policy' which covers all the flats.

I took out separate golf insurance primarily for the third-party cover. I'm still convinced it will be compulsory within a few years.

Hi Homer, specifically asked the self same question. Effectively home insurance is a requirement of mortgage. The mortgage provider insists you have cover to protect their investment. As a result you have public liability cover as standard which in my policy includes recreational golf. When I get the paperwork through I'll pm you the specific term but I now think that most golf insurance providers must counter claim against your home insurer explaining why their premiums are so 'low'.

The EGU (english golf union) do some good policys!

I have one with them.

The only time I used it was to pay for my bar bill after my Hole In One which was part of the policy.

I was very glad for that I dont mind telling you! :D

I took out one of the EGU ones for about £30 including all the usual stuff about 10 years ago. I found that my contents insurance didn't cover my clubs if they were kept outside the house more than 30 days a year and I wanted to have a locker at the club. Worth it just for the peace of mind when I clatter one OB onto a road etc. Only an extra fiver to cover Europe too when required.

The problem with putting it all on the house insurance, is, would you make a claim? When you know that your premium will get caned (forever afterwards), they will have an excess to pay too. I have just had 2k worth of stuff stolen, and it isn't even worth claiming that back.

3rd party cover would be useful though.

Fair point murph and one I hadn't considered. So may be worth thinking about for all you out there. I've never claimed on any insurance before so have no idea the impact it would have on my policy. As these are specified items that I am paying an extra premium for would any claim relate to that premium and therefore if I removed it when I next got insured would there still be a significant impact on my contents? Someone on here must work in insurance!

Ok policy came through today and the clause in Buildings cover relating to public liability is as follows:

YOUR LIABILITY TO THE PUBLIC
We will pay for damages and claimants' costs and expenses which You become legally liable to pay for accidental:
a) death of any person
b) bodily injury to any person
c) illness or disease of any person; or
d) damage to material property;
up to £2,000,000 in connection with any one claim; or series of claims; made against You arising out of any one event occurring during the period of insurance.

Hope this is useful.

Does this apply to accidents that are golf related or accidents that occur on your estate (insured property)?

Interesting footnote, apparently this cover becomes void if you hold another policy elsewhere that covers the same thing.

I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) but that's standard in the insurance industry - you can't insure the same thing twice.

not so sure about can't insure, but you can't claim for the same thing twice.

I think the clause means that if I took out a golf policy and for one reason or another they wouldn't pay out - I couldn't then defer to my home insurance because by taking out the golf cover I voided my buildings liability cover.

Seriously there must be at least one insurance expert on here that can help with this. Or are they afraid of being branded Max Branning? :D
