Seems OK to me as I pass it on the way to the longer stuff.
We used to do that, but on sev holes where the edges got hacked to bits, esp as more and more people are playing in winter now. We also had problems with people having a funny idea where the edge was and just played from the dge of the fairway, now its everywhere apart from the rough.

They cut grass plugs with a hole cutter [about 3" deep] took out the divot with a hole cutter and replaced it with the plug.
Plugs were cut from prepared cut unused areas of the course.
Think how your greenkeeper would repair a divot on a green then multiply it by about 20,000.
12 staff would do a fairway in half a day.

Looked a lot better than that picture of the 6th fairway though.
Mind you they probably had about 50% less wear than nowadays.
Mind you they would have had 50% less greenkeeping staff in the olden days.
BTW I was born and brought up about 300 yards from where that photo was taken.

Strangely, I regularly play with two members and one pronounces it as Gullane and the other Gillane ?
theres at least half a dozen guys who play in our roll up who are Gullane members, the only thime ive ever heard any of them call Gillane was when they were explaining to someome the locals call it Gillane, in a normal conversation all of them call it Gullane

Agreed, always laugh when the "posh" Edinburgh members call it Gillin. ?

My dad worked as a farm Grieve (foreman) for 25 years then as a Postman, it was due to him being local l rather than posh that he called it Gillin I think !

Had to say it out loud a few times to hear what I call it, for me it's Gullan or maybe even Gullin, certainly not Gullain

I'm a Parish member at Gullane and have heard a few people pronounce it 'Gillin', but most people I've encountered in Gullane and North Berwick call it 'Gullin'. From what I can discern it's the old money type of guys that pronounce it the former way. Though I played up at Muirfield yesterday and was surprised to hear one of their members pronounce it 'Gullin'.
