Hi Everyone,

Im kinda new to golf. I was taught to have a firm grip but not too firm. No stronger than squeezing toothpaste out the tube.

Im finding that I am getting mich better results when I do indeed have a string grip. I feel more connected to the club and the results show.

Is this toothpaste analogy then rubbish or am I doing something wrong?

The toothpaste tube grip is more akin to putting but even then, I still think it's hooey. We don't play on glass top greens so a little more grip is required with your putter as well.

You need to have control on your club but equally avoid squeezing the life out of it. You need to find your own balance of how tight that is. A tight grip is a negative, you will lose distance, so ease off as much as you can until you reach the point where the club feels too floppy as you swing.

Trial and error for what suits you.

For a long time, my grip was too tight - often as if I were wringing the last drop out of a floor rag - and it didn't feel very good.

My golf pro recommended that I try slightly larger grips, and the difference is really striking.

Small cause, big effect ! (y) :giggle:

Gripping to tightly will cause tension in the forearm arms and swing, could also cause loss of distance. That being said to loose and you might struggle for control. Analogy of gripping toothpaste or really old school like holding a bird don’t really work because how often do you hold toothpaste in both hands or a bird ever!

It’s about finding what works for you through trial and error. I’ve got pretty small hands but have to put a couple of extra layers on my grips as if it’s standard size I grip to tightly, the thicker layers helps me loosen my grip and relax my arms.

I never really got the toothpaste analogy, I don't like the feeling that the club might fly out of my hands. I think people have analysed pro swings and proven that their grip tightness changes at different points of the swing anyway.

You just need to avoid having tension in your forearms (as Lucifer says above). If your arms feel tensed then you're gripping too tight. If they don't you're fine.
