A friend I was playing a society match with a couple of weeks ago had a gps on his bag and I found it very handy as I had never seen one befor( I happened to win the trip that day but lost the order of merit on the last). This week my new phone comes at it has a gps on it. Does anyone know if I can get a programme to put onto my phone to make my game easyer?
cheers jayuu

R&A rules have allowed GPS systems in competitions provided its allowed under local rule--so check with your Society Secretary and your local club secretary and establish if its allowed in your club/society.

It comes under Rule 14.3 but that ruling says:
" Note: The Committee may make a Local Rule allowing players to use devices that measure or gauge distance only."

Technically a GPS should fail that criterion.

No different to a course guide, tells you the distance you need to hit it,where the bunkers are and the length of the green among other info so do not see the fuss with them being allowed in competition. They are ased by tour caddies now who then have to jot down the info onto paper to make the info being used legal. :D

the motocaddy m3 tells you how many yards(or meters if your european)you have walked to your ball.therefor you can tell the exact distance to the middle or the front of the green it this cheating or just a helpful aid.

Good for stats. Tells you how far you hit off the tee etc.
Should be banned for competition in my view. Use for practise rounds only.

Re: golf gps good or bad?

Motorcaddy have just started selling a chip for the 07 year s3 which dissables the distance counter as this is seen as braking the rules. The new 08 year s3 has a switch to turn it on/off for when local rules say its ok to use distance aides.

hope this helps

PGA have sanctioned the use of them in various PGA events, the Scottish PGA at Gleneagles being 1 of those events. Sandy Jones says they have no problem with them and they indeed speed play up......get into 2008 chaps, these devices are here to stay.

Re: golf gps good or bad?

Not sure how they'll speed things up - especially in a pro game, they need a committee meeting to decide which club as it is.
Saw some of the Bob Hope this evening. Some pros were moaning at being held up by the celebs and a round taking 5 hours. Funny I distinctly remember Ames playing the first round of the Mercedes on his own and saying what a change it was to go round under 5 hours. Must be a different sort of hour!

Lost signal, batteries flat ---- panic!

Re: golf gps good or bad?

anything that speeds play up gets my vote-watched a bit of the womens world cup and jesus that is slow....and what is with the caddies standing behind them every shot and okaying their set up???!! That should be outlawed. Actually what is the point in it, have you ever heard a caddie say no and the player back off and re set up??!! No so get it outlawed, a total waste of time, for me it is like having a 6 iron in hand and not being 100 per cent certain it is the club you want to hit and asking a playing partner what he hit just to make sure. :(
