AS the title says do you do any fitness or exercise to try and help improve your golf, especially over the winter when you get less golf in? Or do you just play golf to get your exercise.

Has anyone tried exercising to improve their golf and if so has it helped?

I was pondering this tonight over my pepperoni and meatball dominos. I know I should really get my finger out, I have a bike and plenty of roads nearby so should get out on it more to work on the cardio and legs side of things.

i was keen on fitness before i took up golf this year and didn't have time to keep it going.i've put a lot weight on since then but i don't know if it would make a difference to my game or not.

what i'm going to do is try and get fit over the winter for the start of next season....

seems all the pro's are right into their fitness....most of them anyway.

im just starting to get my fitness back after 5 years doing very little. Not overly worried about the strength side of things, but flexibility and the ability to play 36 holes without any problem are definately a benefit...

I actually took golf up as a method to get some exercise and lose some weight, i put on some muscle round the shoulders and lost about 5 inches round the waist over the past year, but now I am thinking that with our miserable winters and no comps for the 2 weeks over christmas that i might try and hit the gym and try and get started.

Thinking those 2 weeks of no comps will allow me to get started and over the soreness and stiffness that comes when you start training. Moreso into trying to get more weight off and improve my cardiovascular fitness and flexibility.

my best season was when I was fittest, intend (yeah right) getting fitter over winter, wont get the h/cap where I want it with a big tummy and not fit

I've done nothing fitness wise for months but need to get back into it again as it's starting to showif you know what I mean.

I was talking to my pro the other week and he said yoga or Pilates is one of the best things you can do fitness wise. Builds incredible core strength.

agreed, however you cant beat swimming for ensuring all muscles used and flexible

I don't do any golf fitness but do alot of general fitness (running and cycling) the time i notice most difference is not getting tired and starting to flag comming down the stretch.
A higher overall level of fitness makes walking and playing for several hours much easier

I'm a bit of a health freak so always do a lot of exercise (ex marathon runner and triathlete). I still do mainly cv stuff but as I age :( I'm also doing a bit more resistance work.

I also had a few sessions with a TPI qualified personal trainer so have a programme of golf specific exercises but have been a bit lazy and not really committed to them for a few months (they are a bit boring!). This past week my lower back has been a bit sore so I know it's time to get back on them as they give great stability, help with the "x factor" (go Marcus :whoo:) but mainly mean the muscles and joints that are meant to be stable are and those that are meant to be mobile are...

I never done any specific fitness for golf. Years of good grade cricket has helped me. Now that I'm cricket retired I have started to use an electric trolley and that definitely helps my swing towards the end of a round.

I really do need to give serious consideration to getting fitter. At 17st, 44inch waist and only 5'6" I'm way over what I should be weight-wise. My problem is I sit at a desk all week, so I'm not even getting the basic exercise some jobs give, and I have arthritis in the right hip and lower spine and in pain most of the time.

Would improved fitness improve my scores? I'm very happy with my scores this year and believe better fitness won't make much difference to my scores but I'm sure it would make a difference to how I feel when I walk off the course.

Have heard that yoga/pilates is very good myself though dont think i could manage it too easily at my fitness level/body shape. However the new manager at our place is an ex leisure centre manager and has put up a notice offering a pilates class but as yet i have seen nobody put their name on the list.

My pro said that swimming would be good but not to do the breast stroke as it would not be beneficial, my pro is a 6'7" 23 stone animal, having had caps for Ireland at all levels but the senior squad and also played for London Irish. He actually advises against weight training also unless it is very low weight and fast high reps as the swing is a fast action he says that slow motion heavy reps teaches your muscles in a bad way.

Slightly larger waist than yourself though about 8.5inches taller, was much bigger this time last year before i started playing golf.
Like you i have little exercise from my job being a courier driving from Belfast to Dublin and back 5 nights a week. Used to be the same weight as yourself until start of 2006 when i delivered newspapers to shops and was very active and lifted alot of weight/bundles every night especially weekends and then would run from van to each shop. Once i changed to my current job the weight piled on me like crazy as the appetite and food intake levels were still the same.

I think that some improved cardio-vascular fitness for me would just help, as our 9th hole is a long steep hill and this can tire me out very much from teebox to getting to the ball, and although i recover well i find that the concentration levels then suffer towards the final few holes and the blobs can come on those to ruin a good card. Sometimes it can be coming across the ball with the driver or its the scoring shots/putts.
Now with the ground being so soft it makes it harder trek round too.

My club Captain started at the Gym after he took his role in Mid March and by his Captains day in Mid June he had to have 2 inches taken off his Captains Jacket and more since, he says he finds it easier to shoot a score each week and that he feels fresher after 18 holes than he did after 9 before, he also says he is hitting the ball a bit farther due to the freedom in turning that the weight loss/fitness has given him.

That was actually what prompted me to start this topic to see what others may have also done.

I do not do anything but I have carried for 36 holes with no problem so the basic fitness is there. Really going to make an effort to get the weight down after Xmas. My wife goes to a great gym where they have small classes with a trainer to help 'motivate' so I may be heading there in the new year
