my first GC had bomb craters (it was near Clydebank ship yards which was blasted constantly during the war), they were pretty deep with thick grass and very hard to escape from
I remember a good few years ago a load of kids were dredging one of the ponds in Bootle GC. They used an old shopping basket tied with rope, flung it in the water and dragged it out. They would often get plenty of balls out of the lake and sell them on. Well, one day they got more than they bargained for and pulled out out a live WWII bomb that had been dropped there years earlier! Course was closed off and the bomb disposal team called in. I wasn't on the course at the time but I am sure it would've been a sight to see!
