Flying back with Singapore Airlines and cant get my head round their baggage allowances with golf clubs as part of your weight .

Anyone flown with them?

Flying cattle class you get 20 KG's , does this include your golf clubs or is there some extra weight allowed. Also do they weigh cabin baggage?

From what we can see excess baggage charges kick off at US $ 50/kg
At this rate will just be flying back with the clubs !!

Singapore Airlines are not so anal when it comes to excess baggage as other airlines, ESPECIALLY if you flash your frequent flyer card on check in. I've gotten away with 28kgs before, however never taken clubs.

I can see your concern, and the confusion!

"Golfing equipment

A standard charge of 6kg will be applied on the golfing equipment if its weight and your other checked baggage exceed the free allowance entitled to you. This is applicable up to a maximum excess of 15kg for the golf equipment. Normal excess baggage charges will apply for any excess weight beyond 15kg.

Example: A passenger traveling on Economy Class and carrying golf equipment.

Normal Baggage Normal Baggage Charge Golf Equipment Golf Equipment Charge Total Excess Charge
30 kg 10 kg 10 kg 6 kg 16 kg
30 kg 10 kg 20 kg 6 kg + 5 kg 21 kg
30 kg 10 kg 3 kg 3 kg 13 kg

For excess baggage charges between zones, please click here.

This special charge is only applicable to one set of golf equipment per customer.

One set of golf equipment is deemed to comprise:

1 golf bag containing not more than 14 golf clubs
Maximum of 12 golf balls
1 pair of golf shoes
Golf tees
Any additional golf sets shall be charged according to the standard excess baggage charges.

I interpret this that if you have 20kg baggage, and up to 15kg golf bag, you would pay $300 for the golf bag....which makes Ryan Air look good (I assume). The only way it's less than $300 is if your olf bag plus luggage comes in at under 26kg.

If this is correct I would be shipping my clubs seperately!!!

This is definitely the sort of thing to question via email before flying though - get it in writing and hope they put something nice in their response!

Cheers Duncan.

Have sent them an e-mail and the automated reply promises a reply within 10 working days !!!

Have just looked at shipping them and fed ex and DHL want $650 to $700

If I've read it correctly I've got 7 kg's cabin baggage and then 20 kg's checked baggage, so reckon we'll be OK as we would then put most of our clothes in the container. Will also use large rucksack rather than posh suitcase to keep weight down .

Cheers

I went to Australia last winter and was originally going to fly with Singapore Airlines, that is until I found out that my clubs were going to cost around £240 EACH WAY! It was over Christmas and new year but even so, that's a bit steep. I eventually flew with Emirates, the cost of the ticket was slightly more but clubs go free on all their flights wherever you are going so worked out way cheaper overall. I would advise looking to see if you can fly with another airline who won't stiff you.

Aye I know have always flown Emirates up until now as they offer free golf club transit but we wanted a 4 day stop over in Singapore. Ironically have just looked to see if there are any flights with Emirates left to Singapore and yes there are but it would be on the Singapore plane !! Not much choice down here in NZ .
By traveling light on the clothes front we'll be OK I think with the 20 kg and 7 kg cabin carry on

I went through all this just trying to fly over to play Ballyliffin.

Charges were extortionate!

At first I just added extra weight thinking that covered my clubs for about £12 more but then found in all their terms that "sporting goods" such as golf clubs had a bespoke charge and I was looking at between £50-£75 each way just to fly to Dublin or Belfast! That was more than it cost me to go!
