Does anyone go to there clubs AGM went to mine tonight what a waste of time. The vice captain got made up to captain without a vote of the members it was voted on by the past captain ,does this happen at any other club ?.

Then the vote on putting the fees up £40 got bombed out so there having to call a special AGM ,then a past captain stood up after the vote and finished to moan that there proposal got bombed out it ended a nightmare.

They said they would be £28k short next year a member raised to get rid of the managing secretary who's on £30k (and a waste of space to boot) ,i've never seen so may hands go up for that even tho it will never happen.
All in all a quiet one on past years.

your managing secretary gets 30k, now wonder clubs are going down the tubes. Different if the guy earns his money but I guarantee he wont do enough to merit that salary. i understand why you feel AGM's are a waste of time.

I don't know where the negative vibes are coming from regarding a Club Manager/Secretary position. I take it that this is a full time position ? If it is, then a modern Secretary is actually fulfilling the role of about three of the old part time/voluntary posts.

Take into account all the accountancy, licenceing legislation, H&S legislation, Child Protection, marketing and general staff management duties, I think you'd be pushing it to get a good full time candidate for £30K.
A good Secretary or Manager is worth his /her weight in gold !

Hi Steve

DCB I totally agree, I could also list many more roles the Manager does. This is typical of many Clubs and this is a clear indication that a democratic system doesn’t always work.
Firstly, The Captain has a decisive role at a traditional golf club. He is the Chief Exec, the Boss, top dog and final decision maker. He is the head of the company with the same responsibility as any other company director. Therefore he should posses some managerial / business acumen. If this went to the members vote heaven knows who you could get in.

For example, the guy who suggested the Secretary should be remove from office, or one of the many hands that was raised. They could be the next Captain? You would soon find your Club facing a tribunal or legal action. This sort of conduct certainly brings Clubs in to distribute.

I guess your club (and many others) have very little understanding of what a Secretary Manager does, other wise you would realise that 30k is not an over inflated salary. You would also realise that the role is integral to the business and this role cannot simply be abolished.

Scotscraig is a fantastic Club; you have a superb course and a beautiful clubhouse for less than £10 per week. Your annual fees are extremely low compared to the rest of the UK and £40 per annum (80p per week) will still make your fees very low indeed.

Scotscraig is YOUR golf club, the committee are making decisions on YOUR behalf and in the best interest of YOUR club. I understand you have made some sweeping statements. But it’s important to realise that the members of your club could take the Club in to bankruptcy or in further financial difficulty. Maybe its time to pull together. If you are business minded and have the skills to help why not put yourself forward and help them get out of this difficult situation.

Greensman,

The H&S side of your side of the business has changed out of all recognition to what it was 10-15 years ago. Add into the mix any issues with SEPA legislation (talking scotland here) and it can give a philidelphia lawyer a hard time thinking about it all.

How about simple things like keeping Procedures and Processes up to date ( a club is a business after all) and then worrying if staff on site are actually complying with those procedures. How's your H&S procedure greensman ? Not an easy job keeping on top of that is it ?

Yep. a good manager / secretary is well worth his weight in gold !

As to an AGM defeating a motion for raising the annual subs, well, hows the budget defecit going to be made up without that income ?

Something will have to give ? Less money for course repairs, machinery repairs, clubhouse repairs. It's the start of a vicious circle, especially in these economic times.

Went to a couple of AGM's at the last club I was a member at and tbh they were a waste of time. Apart from the first one when I was on the Commitee and I introduced a ranking system to ge the better players playing the important matches - had to explain that one a few times...

Does anyone go to there clubs AGM....

Thought you were taking your wife out last night Steve? Did you take her along to the clubs AGM, you smooth so-and-so? :D

Was meant to mate but as it was raining she wasn't up for trailing the pubs so went there instead.
Regarding the Managing Secretary he has an assistantwho does everything ,staff wages all the IT you name she does it he squirms his way around the committe but they there to blind and up there own arse to see, he's as much carisma as rainy day.

Nope, went once, got bored, left. Any idiot with th IQ of a mouse can stand up and query the accounts. Why?

Got a new general manager a couple of years ago. The previous one was skimming cash from the club. How much? God knows, but he got caught writing a cheque to himself for a quarter mil, so you can only guess lots.

Strangely, the mice at the AGM were querying bar wastage. Idiots.

Half of them would have him back tomorrow. Apparently he watered the flowers.

I tend to go as I get a chance to voice my views. I think overall our club is doing OK. Not great financially but it has a good team on board throughout the committees now and the board of directors all seem to be pulling in one direction so I'm confident. We don't have a general manager but we have a secretary (and an assistant secretary) who works tirelessly to co-ordinate everything going on through the committees and day to day running and make sure members are kept abreast. Mistakes happen and at the time its a pain but looking at the way the club is for 99% of the time and I'm happy.

The membership fee is too high, there is a need for a dedicated chipping area and I have some gripes about some parts of the course. I'm a realist and realise it all takes money and in a club wit constricting revenue there are more important issues to be tackled. AGM's aren't excitiong (although there have been some good old arguments over the years) but its a chance to make your point known and vote on any comittee or rule changes. If you don't go (or send a proxy vote) how can you make a difference.
