As much as I would like to do the sensible wear any old rubbish thing, my fashion sensibilities force me into wearing at least half-decent stuff. Golf has enough sartorial issues as it is and I don't want to add to them!
got to look smart, brand isn't essential though, although if its a chocie between two brands the better known name will usually get the nod. I am someone who refuses to buy cheap tat to wear on the course though, althoguh I would not judge someone who does. I prefer buying stuff which I know is good quality and will last me a while.
I tend to try and look the part, I do have a nike dry thingy t shirt I picked up for a tenner on Ebay which I like wearing over a hally hanson. I have a couple of pairs of dunlop trousers that I picked up for about a tenner from sports world or I wear a Maine polo and tank top (with hally under) with some cords depending on temps.
I do have a few plain polos bought from Primark for a couple of quid each and are very good for the cost, I just can not justify spending £20-30 on a named big four branded polo. I have a Nike water resistant/wind jammer which is worn always and picked up for £30 from Ebay and some Hamilton Ross waterproof trousers that I wouldn't mind upgrading to a pair of Stuburt ones, and if heavy rain is due then I wear my Berghaus waterproof jacket.
I wear Stuburt Helium Pro shoes as I find them very comfortable and easy on my feet, I will prob change shoes once or twice a year depending on wear.
So all in all if I can not justify buying a new club or a dozen balls then I will buy anything within reason.
Just one thing I have noticed since taking up the game 8 months ago and that is I seem to spend all my spare cash on golf wear rather than normal casual wear, is this normal?
Parmo, its wierd isn't it. Now when shopping I go for the "will I be able to wear that polo / trouser / jumper for golf" thought before anything else.
That said, I had a blow out at the Pringle Factory Shop before christmas and now am the proud owner of 3 tank tops, 1 lairy pink jumper and a hooped polo neck that I would not be seen dead in off the golf course.
The said lairy pink jumper immediately identified me as a golfing freak on a recent flight back from Malaysia where the first thing the guy in the seat next to me said was "hi mate, how long you been playing"
It could of been worse and you had the matching trousers!!
It is strange, before I had never really worn polos now when in Sainsbury's I sly down the mens section eyeing polos for golf or a fleece I could get away with on the course. I must say my appearance off the course has gone down the pan, but who cares I look like Seve on it
Perhaps it was the yellow strides that really gave the game away
I know the time has come for a reality check when I get me some of those customised / personalised Footjoys that have made their way onto the market. I think you should only be wearing those if you are playing off less than 3. At a handicap of 28, I think my money is better spent on some lessons and better clubs.
They are nice shoes though. No offence to anybody who has any by the way.
tbh you are best spending what you can no shoes no matter what your hcp, I bought some £30 Adidas when I started last year and soon found they where killing my feet with lack of support, I then bought the Stuburt for £70 and never looked back.
I just can not see how a callaway T shirt which is made in china is worth £25 different to a £6 one from Sainsburys made where ever, even my Primark ones have lasted 8 months and there is hardly any wear in them and they where something like £3 each. Having said that I would like a couple of nice lambswool sweaters for the 19th.
Have to say, I have a pair of 7 year old Dryjoys and they are the most comfortable pair of shoes I own. I think they were about a ton when I got them, but in terms of vfm on shoes over the years, these have more than been my best buy.
Buy trousers in Tesco or BHS and used to wear any old T-shirt but brought back a load of 'genuine honest' Ping and Callaway polo shirts from Thailand. Have also bought golf gear from Decathlon as Inesis kit is good quality and cheap.
Will spend loads if need be on good shoes though. Have Footjoy LTs for the summer and AQLs for the winter.
Have to say I'm in the "feel good play good" category. I have a mixture of shirts ranging from club shirts (mandatory in club matches), through to some Callaway shirts I bought for their moisture dry system (and they reall do make a difference in Summer) to some plain Callaway polo's I got as a job lot from AG.
I have a large collection of jumpers but they are mainly club jumpers in different colours with th badge on the sleeve. The wife bought me two Nike sleeveless jumpers for Christmas (and a Lyle & Scott).
I tend to buy trousers from M&S or Burtons and go for a colour co-oridinated look (usually blue, black, black/white or green).
I have a pair of black Dryjoys in black that I've had for ages and a pair of Hi Tec CDT's in black/white. I also have several Callaway caps (bit lacking on top now so need them in the Summer) in various colours to complete the look. Even got gloves in blue, white, black/white and white/green for that finishing touch (detail is everything)
I tend to go for branded stuff, but thats because i like wearing names off the course aswell, hugo boss, henri lloyd, Stone island to name but a few. (shallow, Maybe) But it was how i was how i grew up.
So on the course i like to look as smart as i can, and the branded stuff usually does. However i also have plain white polo's from primark at £3 each but would only really wear them under a tank top, jumper or waterproof. Trousers, well i have lots of spare work ones that double as golf ones haha.
My gortex trousers are rom mountain warehouse, reduced from 50 to 18, i have a stuburt gortex jacket reduced from £70 to £30 and my callaway polo tops where given to me by my mate (the callaway staff player) or i got them discounted from AG. I do love a bargain.
Have recently invested in Stromberg Mijas trousers, not something I'd usually do but they are very comfy and fit really well, bit of an effort to look a bit more modern, have some new Ashworth polos this year so hoping a smarter image will help dig out some smarter scores!
This is why we need an updated forum, (not having a go at the poster!)as this was done to death about a month ago, as have hundreds of posts lately. A design which keeps the popular posts circulating back to the top is required.
craw, I've been on here a year and every topic comes up over and over again, golf isn't that huge a topic really. You will find that your posting decreases over time because of this repetition but you dont have to repsond to a thread unless it's of interest.
One forum is plenty, last week there were very few new posts, that will decrease further with the longer nights in a fortnight.
Craw
What you need to bear in mind is that there seems to be an increasing number of newbies on here and they won't always be aware of what we have discussed. Even if we have mentioned it before some people may have a new or different take.
We did shafts to death recently but there are several posts about them (Rifle Shafts etc) but I'm prepared to read them even if I don't want to contribute
I certainly think that the latest entry to a posting should be at the top of the forum list, as appossed to this chronlogical stuff. That way it keeps the most popular posts at the top and encourages more interaction. Sorry, not trying to hijack the thread.
Meanwhile back to the thread. I like to look the part (not Ian Poulter though). Having the right kit not only makes you feel the part, but also makes you 'think' the part. I'm not suggesting that you need to buy the latest big name brands, (as we all know you can get some cracking deals and not so bad looking kit at Primark), but looking the part is important in any sport or activity. You wouldn't play tennis in jeans and a pair of Brogues. Yes, dress code is part snobbery, but it also instills a sense of belonging. Same reason teenagers wear hoodies, that goths dress the same, punks, etc. Every sport has its own unwritten dress code rules, and I don't think it's a bad thing at all.
As golf is a sport i beieve players should "togged" out properly for a game-You won't wear any old shorts and socks to play football.
I generally buy a lot of my polos and trousers in the states when on hols or get the wife to get some when she attacks NY before Xmas. Have polos various manufacturers-- Ping, Adidas, Nike, Polo and Izod-which is great brand and better value than the better known brands.
