Someone sent me this in an email last week and I thought it might be of interest and apologies if it has been posted before.......

The linked video footage is shot at 70,000 frames per second and is quite surprising. I had no idea the golf ball compresses this much. But first a little history:

1 - The Pro V-1 golf ball by Titleist is actually a three part ball, but you have to have a club head speed of at least 100 mph or more to be able to compress all three stages. If you don't the ball never fully compresses and you don't get the distance out of it that the pro's do.

2 – The average golfer will get more distance out of a ball that only has two stages of compression, like the Titleist NX Tour. It is more suited to the 70-100mph swing speed as this means it can be compressed it upon impact and will travel further than the Pro V-1 ball.

3 - So perhaps the secret is not to buy the most expensive balls out there because you can actually decrease the distance you hit the ball, unless your club head speed is over 100 mph!

Watch this video, this shows what a golf ball goes through when hit at 150 mph, it's amazing to me how long these balls last.

Remember, it's 70,000 frames per second.

That isn't any of the balls you have mentioned and behaves more like a commando than any proper golf ball.

I do agree with the bit about choosing your golf ball properly but this isn't what a proper golf ball does.

That is amazing especially at 16 secs when it is completely flat. But I'm not sure I agree with your theory Snelly. I rank feel around the greens higher than distance but below spin off driver and price.

To clarify, this isn't my theory at all so apologies if my initial post was misleading. The content is just what I received in an email that I pasted into this thread. I have no opinion at all on what golf ball anyone except me should use and for what it's worth, agree with the post above that the feel of an expensive ball around the greens outweighs the distance benefit of a more solid ball.

It is a real golf ball though. It is a from a BBC documentary I think.

Lastly, this is not what happens to a golf ball during a golf shot. It is travelling at a speed 20mph in excess of the fastest golf swing and is hitting an immovable, solid steel plate rather than a trampoline faced driver with some give in it.

I didn't realise that we had so many independent experts on here that knew so much about this clip and can dispute elements of it with such certainty! :D

I think it is interesting anyway....

oi, leave the commando balls out of it. I fond a brand new one last week when playing, and as is was in my pocket used it as a provi off one of the tee's, it was only 5 yards short of my NXT, looked nasty at address though

Nice. Never ceases to amaze me,what happens to the ball when it gets hit.
Bet some of these spectators at pro events wish the ball compressed like that when it connects with their napper.

Ball hitting a thick steel plate is surely not the same thing as thin titanium sheet striking a stationary ball.

Also, a complete flattening of the ball like that would reduce distance as the energy from the contact is going into oscillating the interior of the ball rather than propelling it further.

Yea the first one is much more exciting.

On a slight tangent, I've just spent the last 30 mins watching slow motion videos on Youtube. Some of them are awesome!

My apologies. Never mean to poke fun at people and the equipment they use.

Does that mean your NXT's don't compress enough when you hit them?? :D
