Why is it that the sport of golf still uses the Imperial System of units (yards) to calculate measurements? Metrication was brought in around 40 years ago and is obviously the method taught in schools, so for any youngsters coming into the game it must be difficult to convert to thinking in yards rather than metres.

Is it just another example of golf and it's establishments remaining in the 'traditional ways' whilst also wondering why there are a lack of younger players starting up?

Yes I know if would take a lot of time, effort and cash to make the change, but surely it's about time the sport was brought up to date and converted to metric?

Its not difficult at all... It's just a unit that is applicable to the game. If you know the conversion or have a list of club distance in metres and yards it really is no issue. I guess you may find it hard if you read the daily mail though... But then again life in general would be hard for you.

I don't think someone would not play golf because they measure shots in cubits, chains or furlongs.... or yards.

When is cricket going to update? ;)

There are many examples of where imperial measurements are used. We still order beer in pints, drive our cars at mph and miles, and as far as our kids are concerned, ask them how tall they are. They won't tell you they're 183 cms, they will tell you they are 6 feet tall.

And damn all those pesky car manufacturers that decide to emphasize miles per hour instead of KM/hour.
And all those road signs throughout the UK ... I am always late as I constantly forget that we don't always work in the metric system...

I see your point though!

Its because the game is played by old geezers like me!

If I am asked for £1.35 for a cake I still convert to LSD and wont buy it, cos it would have been 1s and 6d back then , so too expensive, I think in feet and inches and drink a pint - I still want 145 yards to the pin so, leave it alone!

To the sound of "get it down you zulu warrior"?

lol but of course!!! :)

Im sure we Brits are the cause of slow play issues when we go to the continent.... as we desperately try to add on our fingers the 10% to our yardage conversions! Even more difficult with a skin full of Begian's finest in you from the night before!

Generally before golf I'll get up, have a shower and get dressed (my trousers are 34" waist\36" leg in case you're wondering). I'll pour some milk from the 2 pint bottle in the fridge on my cornflakes. Jump in my car and drive the 7 miles to the course, making sure not to break the 30mph speed limit. After the round I'll have a pint and maybe I'll order a 10oz steak and chips...

...and golf needs to convert to metric because?
