GMac has hit two balls off the tee, both into a gorse bush, his second is very awkward, but he is trying to find the first "so he can go back to the tee", why? Surely if he played a provisional then thats it, or is it that the original is unplayable so a different rule comes into play?

He ended up hitting his provisional ball, but can someone explain why the commentator was talking about finding the first ball so he could go back to the tee. Thanks.

Once you find your original ball that is the ball that is in play the provisional ball becomes irrelevant. The provisional is only an use if he fails to find the first ball.

Yes and be three of the tee by if be never found it and wanted to do the same with the provisional it would be five of the tee I think

Using the rules is exactly it, nothing wrong with that. He hit his first, stuffed it, hit a prov, stuffed it. Find the first one it is the same as any shot you get your three options.
1. 2 club relief, shot penalty
2. take a line back keeping ball in line, one shot penalty
3. go back to the tee, again a shot penalty but you can bet your bottom dollar he wouldnt make the same mistake again.

Well he ended up scoring 9 so if he could of started again then I dont blame him for looking hard, sorry to ask a stupid question like this but me and the chap I play with are beginners and we always drop a ball or play a provisional. If we walked back to the tee every time we were in this situation we would never get round :D

if we are just havin a knock about with friends then we will just drop the ball where we think we lost the existing one, its only social though so not competing with each other either.

I know it is not the rules but like i said, its only a bit of fun

If unsure on the tee, hit a provisional ;)

I'm actually quite good at losing the provisional and finding the original - right pain in the backside..........from a losing balls point of view.

So here is the lesson. If you think you ball MAY be lost or OOB then him a prov.

Same here, but I don't just lose them off the tee, I manage to lose them everywhere, I could probably manage to lose a ball on the green.
