Morning all,
We're putting the finishing touches to the November issue today, and celebrating with an end-of-issue Order of Merit event tomorrow at Thorndon Park in Essex (a Harry Colt course).
For anyone vaguely interested, here is an assessment of everyone's chances in a fairly small field-event:-

Neil Tappin - back on form it would seem following a weekend round at Liphook in which he apparently hit one of the longest drives of all time. But as Take That might ask: is he back for good - or will the added pressure get to him?

Michael Weston - after spending half an hour this week in the company of the one and only Golden Bear, Westy could well be on a high. One to watch

Alex Narey - the man charged with putting the issue to bed (as we say in the trade) may find it tricky to de-stress and unwind. That said, he's another to have hit one of the longest drives of all time last weekend.

Tom Clarke - no great 2009 form to speak of yet in his rookie season, but will be out to impress on his home patch and could be a surprise package at a course where he holds a small local knowledge advantage (but probably won't be).

Jezz Ellwood - another one harping on about turning the corner in a season that has seen his results graph mirror the economy's downturn. Club selection could be an issue after last weekend's 'reserve set' semi-success.

Jim Mason - the Joe Pasquale of the graphic design world has been stunningly inconsistent in his only two outings to date - runaway winner on our last Essex sortie; out with the washing last month at Fulwell. Hard one to call.

Not playing
Mike Harris
- a sad case of misplaced loyalties for The Ed. Unbelievably, the top man has chosen to put his daughter's first ever day at school ahead of a GM OOM event. Disappointing.

Paul O'Hagan - apparently attending a wedding. Sceptics wonder whether the current OOM leader, in a system based on year-long averages, is now running a little scared and not playing to protect his lead. Shame on him.

So, the magazine gets put to bed on deadline day and the staff are off to enjoy themselves on the golf course. I can understand that.

But, what do the staff at the sister mags, like Essentials do when they go to print... do they go off on a massive girls day out testing makeup and looking at shoes and handbags ?

Have a good day guys and make sure you let us know who tops the tree at the end of the day.

You might find this hard to believe Jezz, but I would rather be hunting for your ball in the trees than attending a wedding tomorrow. I am just giving you a chance to make up some ground as mid-table mediocrity is looming. I think who ever wins tomorrow will always have to deal with the fact that the leader of the order of merit was not in attendance. It is a tough call, but i predict this will be a case of last man standing and Michael Weston will take the title with a crowd pleasing 23 points.

Any comparison between either Paul O'Hagan or Mike Harris and Tiger Woods is so wide of the mark my mind can't even begin to fathom it. It's a little more akin to Briny Baird and Joey Sindelar not being in the field (ie - unlikely to make much difference to the outcome).

I believe our colleagues on Cage & Aviary birds celebrate by spending the afternoon looking at birds in cages, but beyond that I'm not really sure...

ah yes, I've seen those cages. lovely plumage those birds. Not a lot of it but lovely plumage.

Even taking into account a 'small local knowledge advantage', I've heard that Clarke can only, just about, hit a ball if it's red and covered with leather.

yawn
the OOM's two genuine class acts not in the field, those who are teeing it up have been struggling with their form, 2 players short of Major billing (and the points that go with it) unknown host course, talk of playing cricket afterwards
frankly the whole thing smacks of a Madiera Cake Classic type event
enjoy your day in the sun but remember with me and the Hulk otherwise engaged the event winner will have an asterisk against their name to denote the absence of the main men and underline the shallow nature of their win

As one who is surprised Paul has managed to discover a consistant streak this season, I'm sure he'd prefer to be there proving the doubters wrong and extending his lead.

With a lot of unknown runners and riders in the field I'm going to have to go with what I know and fancy Tappers to continue the Liphook rennaissance

I had a look at the course plan and it looks like it would favour gentleman golfers, not too many to really sling the dog.
Lots of unknowns, so how about Tappers and Jezz going head to head and Alex nipping in to steal when they're not looking?

This year's GM Order of Merit is a joke anyway. Dogged as it has been by slow play, yesterday we uncovered an incident of (unintentional) cheating. The points system also seems to favour those who rarely turn out.

In short, it's become like the Tour de France. And for this reason mid-table mediocrity is nothing to be ashamed of!

Tappers

As a lifelong Fulham fan I'm use to, and pray at the start of every season, for mid-table mediocrity. These fly boys will have their moments in the sun but its about patience and waiting for the right moment to peak.
