Has anyone else gotten their young ones interested in golf at a fairly early stage? (ie, before the age of ten)
MY eldest is 6 now and loves going to the practice area with me, So far she has a pair of Junior AQLs a sandwedge and putter. I am convinced that if she stays interested, these are the two clubs she will need to be proficient with before she needs to worry about longer irons and woods.

I had her up at the practice area yesterday and have to say more of her contacts were better than mine (I was there to cure my shermans which I think I have at last made progress on) Anyway, this is Hollie,6.

have two boys and they love it one is 6 and the other is 8
we where down the club last night for a few hour and the kids starts again on a friday night so they will go to that i find you have to let them try a few things and not to force it them if love golf as i am sure you do they will get to see that and feed of your love of the game and a good way to do things together

Hi Matt, what I found was that she got bored easily if I stood hitting mid irons as she couldnt hit it anywhere near as far and needed targets so I take her for the short game practice now and have chipping competitions. I threw 50 balls into the bunker towards the end and was surprised to see she got 5 out of around 9 attempts out. We have a couple of successful young ladies at our club and would love my wee ones to become even half as talented, single figures would be great though as long as they enjoy it as much as I do.

My son loves golf and he loves it in the 19th he can hit 50yrds and hes 2 and a half, the key to youngsters playing is teach them grip and then let them hit and also let them watch as they pick up things that you wouldnt realise.

Been there, done that..... got the now too short sticks to prove it !

My daughter is now 12 and has progressed to the Junior section of the golf club. She's been at the range with us virtually since she could walk. We've been through three sizes of kids clubs and she's now got her own bag of Mizuno Tava ladies clubs 6-SW and a nice MX560 driver.

Biggest concern is keeping it light hearted and making sure they enjoy it. We play for a wee trophy when on holiday, so my daughter thimks it's great when she beats her dar (and mum !)

Our junior coaching kicks in in another fortnight, so hopefully she'll pick up a bit more there and try to get her handicap this summer.

Best of luck with your daughter Brendy, our club has been good at trying to get the girls involved, hope Bangor can do the same for you.

he can hit 50yrds and hes 2 and a half,
highly doubt it , mcilroy only hit it 40 yards when he was 2

Does that make my boy potentially better than Mcilroy then.As your only thirteen i wont bite but if you look at this link ,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2Mqy2VyCZg i then will except your appology .

Is that not a bit competative at that age? had my youngest out last night for 9 holes ,they set up tee's for the kids on the front 9 well up the fairways ,he had a few duffs but hit some really good shots, you've just got encourage them to enjoy it.
They don't have any inhibitions they just stand up and try and hit it, i haven't shown him how to grip it i've just let get on with it,but starting on Sunday he'll get his lessons from our club pro so i'll let him show him how to do it.
They're like sponges at that age they just soak up everything they get told, you've just got encourage them, plus its another excuse to get out more .

My lad is just 10 and has been coming to the range with me for the last 3 or 4years.
Last year he started having lessons with the assistant pro who does group tuition on Sunday mornings. Just after Christmas he had 3 1on1 lessons and all he(lad) was interested in was the short game as this gives him more results from his efforts.
Should be sterting up the group tuition again at the start of may.

How can you say that? Not every pro was great when they started. McIlroy could have had a h/c of 20 for years and then got his act together.

No offence to your lad if it sounds like im saying he will be off a 20 h/c for his golfing career but i didn't know how else to explain how ant is wrong

My wee monkey is 3 and he loves going to the practice area with me. I just pitch about and let him hit balls as and when he wants and how he wants.

He hits it with the front of the club, the back of the club, left handed & right handed. He's having fun so I leave him to get on with it. He tells me when he wants to go home and we leave.

At that age its all about the kid having fun and enjoying themselves.

Totally agree let them play, mine will tell you when hes had enough but usually its me that wants to leave,he likes nothing more than coming to the club and having a drink, orange squash of course.
