Finally found somewhere local to me where I could book time on a launch monitor. Actually, I found their website quite a while ago but have never got through / forgotten to call / the 4th official did not listen to Fabregas' legs.

As well as the £40 for up to 4 players for an hour playing a famous course, they sell time on range mode at £15 per hour during off-peak times ie. someone is there doing something else anyway and the LM isn't being used.

An hour would probably have been enough because all I wanted to do was get yardages with different swings with my new wedges, but I know what I'm like so I booked 2 hours.
At the end of it I was knackered and still hadn't done all I wanted to do.

Things I learnt:

  • My longer clubs go further than I thought. Possibly being outside has more effect on them than shorter shots?
  • My guesses for irons are about right, a touch on the conservative side.
  • Off centre strikes with a driver have a big effect on backspin.
  • My 'punch' swing doesn't take off anywhere near the yardage I thought it did.
  • My partial wedge shots are very consistent (within a couple of yards).
  • I have no combination of club/swing that carries between 53 and 74 yards!

If anyone is into this sort of thing and needs somewhere to go, Golf Store in Burbage is a good setup.

It is an eye opener for sure. I've only recently had a session with GC2 during a lesson.
can I ask why you felt the need, as an experienced player, to reassess your yardages?

I've played a round on a sim, but I don't think that was a good judge of distance, the driver was carrying 305yrds and rolling out to 340yrds..

The last time I measured any wedge yardages was 3 sets ago, and my swing - especially part swings - (as well as my lofts) has changed since then.

That was the main reason, but I was also interested in seeing numbers for height with irons and spin with driver.

Plus it's fun for someone that likes golf, gadgets and numbers :D

Also forgot to mention, gripping down an inch had zero effect on distance with short-mid irons (didn't test longer clubs).

That's quite surprising since it is endorsed by many pro's including RM

I'm not saying it doesn't work, just that it doesn't work for me.

I would think it's more likely a fault in my full swing not making full use of the leverage rather than "gripping down doesn't work".

Guessing cos your gripped down you end up ripping it.

Long been a fan of using a launch monitor now and then to see the numbers and get information on yardages etc. Great if you can find a facility and I think this is something more and more places will start offering

Iplaygolf in Newport Pagnell is awesome. £12 an hour regardless of time of day/week. I think it's £15 an hr with HMT as the dots cost a few quid.

Great atmosphere, cool staff, good coffee. I spent a lot of time there this winter both practicing and playing courses.

It's very interesting going lots as its closes data and some days I just cannot swing as fast as others. Apart from SS and thus ball speed, my numbers are very constant and the SS differences are 2 or 3 mph.
