Gazza

My hero too, that was until I saw him play for Boro at Hillsborough in the mid/late 90's, he got subbed at half time as he barely touched the ball for the first 45 minutes!

You saw him on a bad day. I was gutted when he signed for Boro, but he proved me wrong. He was outstanding all season, and pretty much ensured promotion back into the premiership.

I saw him play for Spurs Vs Forrest circa 1988/9 what a player! That was at the time people were throwing mars bars at him as he was a bit chunky..

I don't really think we understand sometimes just how good some of our English players are. The way that he played was such a joy to watch, he messed about and just enjoyed playing football as if he was on the park with his mates. Very rarely do you see that these days.

Met him with Jimmy 5 bellies at a sport shop that I worked in as a kid in Bradford and he was brilliant, spent time with us all, played kick ups, signed authographs and just seemed to enjoy being round normal people kicking a ball about.

Without a shadow of a doubt the most talented footballer England has produced for 25 years or so and by a country mile the best player I've seen play the game. He had the lot - skill, touch, balance and bravery. I daren't think what he'd fetch in the transfer market right now if he was 18-20 years old now.

I had the pleasure to actually play against him when I was serving on HMS Newcastle many years ago and our ships football team played Newcastle Utd's reserves. He was very young but I think he nutmegged every one of our players that day and was a laugh a minute! We all talked about how he stood out and then hey presto, a couple of years later he hit the big time.

It is such a shame to see how his personal life has panned out. I truly hope he can keep himself out of trouble.
