Right interested in your opinions on this one. In 2004 I volunteered at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. It was an amazing experience and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. I was also fortunate enough to be selected as a Games Maker but unfortunately the shifts I was allocated were impossible for me to fulfil due to the inflexible start finish times. Watching the Games I did wish I was there being involved. Now having attended and been involved in a number of large multi sport events I know what a difference volunteers make to the experience. I also think they deserve the recognition for giving up their time BUT let's be honest the driving motivation is to be part of a once in a lifetime event. It therefore fills me with a degree of sadness that the media and government have gone overboard in their adulation, when there are other people out there who do tough, uncompromising, challenging volunteer work to help their community or individuals in challenging circumstances. These people are rarely celebrated. Am I being unfair?
