One for the limited number of GAA fans on here although maybe since it has recently arrived on Sky more fans may have found this ancient sport. :D

As a one time player of football I have always kept an eye on the games back home. The real Farneymen in Monaghan have had some success recently which helps. :whoo:

Anyway as the GAA are potentially looking to change the format what do you think of the GPA ideas?

Also good to see the exposure the hurling games are getting stateside.

GAA all the way!

This may be a very short thread lol

In my pre-married days i travelled over to Ireland on a number of occasions to watch GF and Hurling as well as travelling up to Ruislip to watch London.

I can understand the proposals to change the A-I championship. Whilst the idea of winning your province and then progressing through the A-I is the romantic utopia the importance of the Championship season has become so huge now that players and counties dont want to put in all that preparation for the risk of just 2 Championship matches. Plus there were inherent problems such as provincial finallists having just a 6 day turnaround before the qualifiers. (Not sure if this has been changed in recent years?)

After all, the sacrifices by players etc is huge.

Great stuff. I can remember watching a Kerry SFC game one evening a few years back in lovely evening sunlight and Purple Mountain in the background. Happy memories!

Good idea, but more fixtures will cause problems for the club fixtures. Played inter county up to u21 before I moved to london. Enjoyed the gaa scene in london before eventually packing it in.

With the new proposals the final will be early September instead of 3rd week. This allows for club league and championship games.

Yeah also played county Minor and U21 before moving to Scotland for college. Did travel back home for games for the first 2 years but that got too much after a while. There was a great college scene for games and got involved in a Wales, Scotland and North, South England Railway cup type colleges competition.

Going back home for our clubs Centenary year gala ball on 23rd of October. It will be good to catch up with the guys I played with and won league and championship with. :D

I had a look at the GPA proposal presentation at the end of last week and on first look it seems to make a lot of sense. No doubt some people will pick holes in the minor details and they will need to be ironed out, particularly where the club system fits in. But i think most people are in agreement the current system needs to be overhauled. The National League is like a bunch of pre-season friendlies used in preparation for the championship. If this proposed system can make the league games a lot more worthwhile then they will attract bigger crowds and tv audiences.

When did you play U21? We got beat by Monaghan when I played for Antrim - 2001 I think!

Surely that was hurling...Didn't know Antrim had any footballers ;)

Played minor in 94 (and U18 schoolboys soccer :D 1 cap wonder)and U21 in 96 and 97. Got a call up to train with the senior panel in 99 but was studying in Scotland at the time, travelling home for club games at weekends, so that never happened.

The actual game has changed so much since those days.
